Women's Hoops Falls 50-46 at Lake Superior State

The Warriors had a 43-36 edge in rebounding.

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (11-11 overall, 6-8 GLIAC) fell 50-46 at Lake Superior State (7-14 overall, 2-12 GLIAC) on Thursday evening.

To start the contest, sophomore Tori Perez (Belleville, Mich.) made a layup for the Warriors before a 12-0 run by LSSU.  At the 3:21 mark, senior Paige Villemure (Flat Rock, Mich.) made the second and final WSU bucket of the quarter.  The Green and Gold were outscored 16-4 in the first stanza.

Wayne State started to gain momentum in the second period, recording the first six points.  The Warriors allowed five points over the next 1:50, but responded with their own five points to pull within six at 21-15, including a basket from long distance by junior Alex Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic) at the 2:23 mark.  Lake Superior State's Lexie Khon drained a triple in the final three seconds, leaving WSU down by nine points at the end of the half.

Senior Ja'Nae Williams (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) tallied the first two points of the second half at the 9:32 mark.  Junior Lyndsey Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic) was the next Warrior to score, draining a three-point bucket with 7:59 on the clock.  Over the next 2:37, Wayne State outscored LSSU, 8-7, including four points from junior Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep).  Chambers cut the deficit to three points (33-30) after a layup at the 4:24 mark, the closest the Warriors had been since early in the contest.  WSU made three shots from the charity stripe in the final 2:57 of the third stanza, while the Lakers tallied seven points to lead 41-33 after three quarters.

The Warriors allowed five points at the beginning of the final period, before scoring the next six points, including two buckets from Chambers.  Lyndsey Matus made a three-point shot with 4:22 on the clock, cutting the deficit to five (48-43).  After a 2:21 scoring drought for both teams, the final points of the contest were scored from the foul line.  Wayne State outscored Lake Superior State 3-2 in free throws during the final 2:01, but it wasn't enough to finish on top.

TEAM STATS
WSU shot 25 percent (16-of-63) from the floor, while LSSU connected on 31 percent (15-of-48) of its field-goal attempts.  The Warriors went 11-of-18 (61 percent) from the charity stripe, while the Lakers were 13-of-18 (72 percent) in free throw attempts.  Wayne State had a 43-36 edge in rebounds, while also leading 28-8 in bench points, 26-12 in points in the paint, and 12-5 in fast break points.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Chambers recorded a team-high 12 points.  Williams also scored in double digits (11), while grabbing eight rebounds.  Freshman Sam Cherney snagged a game-best and a career-high 19 boards.

LEADING THE LAKERS
Khon tallied a team-best 12 points, including 2-of-3 on three-point attempts.  Jenna Gregory grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.  Gregory and Sadie DeWildt each scored nine points, with DeWildt connecting on 6-of-8 free throws.
