Women's Hoops Wins 55-46 at Ferris State

The Warriors led 34-14 in points in the paint.

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (12-11 overall, 7-8 GLIAC) notched a 55-46 victory at Ferris State (11-10 overall, 8-7 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon.

In the first 3:09 of the contest, the Warriors tallied seven points, including two layups by junior Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep), while only allowing two points for FSU.  The Bulldogs scored another two points at the 6:17 mark, but Chambers and senior Ja'Nae Williams (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) responded each with a bucket, giving WSU a seven-point lead (11-4).  During a 3:19 scoring drought for Ferris State, Williams tallied two points for the Green and Gold.  FSU attempted to cut the deficit by making a layup with 36 seconds on the clock, but junior Lyndsey Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic) drained a three-point shot to give the Warriors a 16-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Over the first 6:14 of the second stanza, the Bulldogs cut their deficit to three points (20-17).  Williams and Chambers were the only players to score for Wayne State during that time.  Freshman Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) was the next to make a bucket at the 1:47 mark.  The Green and Gold ended the half with a 24-17 lead after a layup by freshman Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville) with six seconds on the clock.

Williams went 4-of-4 from the charity stripe to score the only Warrior points in the first 5:10 of the fourth period, while Ferris State tallied 10 points.  The Bulldogs tied the score at 45-45 with 2:19 on the clock, but Chambers responded with back-to-back layups.  Williams, Cherney and Sherwood each made a pair of free throws in the final 45 seconds giving WSU a nine-point advantage.

TEAM STATS
WSU shot 27 percent (19-of-70) from the floor, while FSU connected on 25 percent (15-of-60) of its field-goal attempts.  Wayne State went 15-of-24 (63 percent) in free throw attempts, while Ferris State was 13-of-19 (68 percent) from the foul line.  The Warriors had a 53-48 edge in rebounds, while also leading 21-7 in bench points, 34-14 in points in the paint, and 16-2 in fast break points.

Chambers scored a game-high 19 points.  Williams recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 18 points and a team-best 10 rebounds.  Williams went 8-of-10 from the charity stripe.

Riley Blair tallied a team-high 17 points and a game-best 11 rebounds, while Alexis Bush scored nine points.
