2020 Swimming and Diving Seniors
A total of nine seniors were recognized at the meet.

Men's Swim and Dive Edged 157-142 by GVSU on Senior Day

The Warriors will compete at the 2020 GLIAC Championships, beginning on Feb. 19th.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's swimming and diving team fell 157-142 to Grand Valley State on Saturday afternoon in its final home meet of the season.

SENIOR RECOGNITION
Four Warriors swam in their final home meet of their collegiate career.  The swimmers that were recognized on Senior Day include Ahmed Ahmed (Alexandria, Brazil), Leonardo de Oliveira (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Ryan Katulski (Novi, Mich.) and Joao Martimbianco Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil).

INDIVIDUAL RESULTS
Redshirt sophomore Franz Mueller (Brandenburg, Germany) earned first place in both the 100 back (51.19) and the 200 back (1:53.58).  Freshman Luka Cvetko (Varazdin, Croatia) landed fourth in the 100 back with a time of 53.84 and fifth in the 200 back, clocking in at 1:58.23.  Sophomore Chris Spencer (Jackson, Mich. / Lumen Christi Catholic) placed fourth in the 200 back (1:58.01) and fifth in the 100 back (54.28).

Ribeiro tallied wins in both the 200 breast (2:04.90) and the 200 IM (1:53.50).  Sophomore Derek Wilson (Marysville, Mich.) completed the 200 breast in fourth place with a time of 2:13.97, while Spencer competed the 200 IM in fifth place (2:01.62).

Ahmed notched a victory in the 200 free (1:43.74), followed by freshman Casey Dolen (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Dexter) in third place with a time of 1:45.62.

WSU earned the top three spots in the 50 free, including a first-place finish by Katulski who clocked in at 20.91.  Junior Jack Rogers (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Portage Central) was next to finish, completing the event in 21.44.  Sophomore Stewart Nowinski (Macomb, Mich. / L'Anse Creuse North) placed third with a time of 21.76.

Katulski finished the 100 free in second place (46.62), followed by Rogers in third place (47.31) and Nowinski in fourth place (48.05).

Freshman Hans Anderson (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) was the runner-up in the 100 breast with a time of 59.87, and Wilson placed third (59.90).  First-year Warrior Hussain Alzaid (Kuwait City, Kuwait) claimed the fourth spot, finishing the race in 1:01.54.

Ahmed earned a second-place finish in the 500 free with a time of 4:42.89.  De Oliveira's fourth-place finish was completed in 4:48.87.

Sophomore Abdelrahman Hassan (Cairo, Egypt) placed second in the 100 fly, clocking in at 51.86.  Mueller and Cvetko claimed the third (51.95) and fourth (52.67) spots, respectively.

Sophomore Grant Porter (Haslett, Mich.) finished third on the three-meter board with 245.18 points, followed by freshman Andrew Ceely (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Skyline) in fifth place with 212.03 points.

De Oliveira was the first Warrior to finish the 1000 free, completing the event in fourth place with a time of 9:59.52.  Sophomore Kyle Lovas (Shepherd, Mich. / Alma) placed fifth in the 1000 free (10:04.32).

Ribeiro completed the 200 fly in fourth place (1:57.80), while freshman Josh Mahaney (Saline, Mich.) placed fifth with a time of 1:59.15.

Ceely was the top WSU diver with a fourth-place finish on the one-meter board, tallying 224.85 points.

RELAY RESULTS
WSU notched a victory in the 400 medley relay, finishing the event in 3:23.42.  The quartet consisted of Mueller as the lead off, Ahmed, Ribeiro and Katulski as the anchor.

The Green and Gold also placed first in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:07.05.  The group included Katulski, Rogers, Nowinski and Ahmed.

A WORD FROM COACH PETERS
"I am so proud of our Warriors," commented head coach Sean Peters.  "They did everything that a great team does... swam hard, performed well, had a great time together, and competed with honor.  I am also so proud of our seniors and of the leadership and contributions that they brought to this team.  They are truly a magnificent group.  It is a great day to be a Warrior!"

The Warriors will compete in the 2020 GLIAC Swimming and Diving Championships, beginning on February 19th.
