Women's Basketball Falls 86-85 in OT Thriller vs. Ferris State

The Warriors lost on a buzzer beater.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (12-9 overall, 6-7 GLIAC) suffered an 86-85 setback in overtime to Ferris State University (15-6 overall, 9-4 GLIAC) at the Matthaei on Saturday afternoon as FSU's Chloe Idoni's put back with 0.2 seconds remaining was good.

HOW IT HAPPENED
In a slow start for both squads, Idoni's layup on FSU's opening possession was the only points in the first 2:09 of the contest.  Senior Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep) tied the score 2-2 at the 7:50 mark, but the Bulldogs went on a five-point run to lead 7-2.  Each team tallied four points over the next 1:30, before a 1:58 scoring drought for Wayne State.  During this time, FSU drained a triple for a 14-6 advantage.  Sophomore Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.) and senior Sadia Johnson (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Central) made back-to-back layups, pulling the Warriors within four (14-10) with 1:52 left in the quarter.  Ferris State's Samantha Krauss made a three-pointer with less than a minute left.  The Warriors scored five consecutive points, including a triple by freshman Rebecca Fugate (Holly, Mich.), to finish the first stanza with a two-point deficit at 17-15.

In the first 6:30 of the second quarter, each team scored 10 points to keep the Bulldog advantage at two (27-25).  Ferris State scored four straight points, but Chambers responded with a long-distance bucket at the 2:09 mark.  WSU limited the Bulldogs to only free throws in the remainder of the second period, outscoring FSU 4-3.  All four Green and Gold points came from freshman Mercedes Wagner (Sherwood, Ohio / Fairview).  Wayne State trailed 34-32 at halftime despite Chambers scoring a game-high 11 points over the first 20 minutes.

During the first three minutes of the second half, the Warriors had a 12-10 scoring advantage to knot the game at 44-44 on a conventional three-point play by Johnson.  During this time, junior Tori Perez (Belleville, Mich.) tallied WSU's first six points, while Johnson scored the final six points.  Ferris State went on a five-point spurt for a 49-44 advantage at the 5:20 mark.  Each team recorded six points over the next 2:01.  Back-to-back layups by Johnson cut the WSU deficit to one point (55-54) with 2:35 left in the period.  Bulldog Riley Blair made a layup at the 1:35 mark, but sophomore Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) responded with her own bucket.  The Green and Gold allowed two points from the foul line to trail 59-56 at the end of the third quarter.

A five-point Wayne State run to start the frame gave the Warriors a 61-59 lead, their first of the contest.  The Green and Gold allowed two free throws before scoring another five straight points for a 66-61 advantage with 5:34 on the clock.  Four consecutive points from the visiting team cut the Warrior lead to one point, but George drained a triple at the 4:38 mark to extend the WSU advantage to 69-65.  Blair recorded a point for FSU from the charity stripe, but George tallied two of her own with 2:52 remaining in the stanza.  A triple by Krauss pulled Ferris State within two points (71-69) at the 2:36 mark.  Each team scored a basket with less than 1:30 left on the clock, but a FSU bucket by Mallory McCartney with 34 seconds left tied the score 73-73.

The Green and Gold allowed three points at the start of overtime.  Four straight points from George helped WSU regain a 77-76 lead with 3:21 on the clock.  Blair gave the Bulldogs a 78-77 lead with a layup 20 seconds later.  A free throw and a layup by senior Alex Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic) helped Wayne State to an 80-78 advantage at the 1:59 mark.  Both teams scored two points from the foul line over the next 36 seconds.  The Warriors led 84-80 with 1:05 on the clock after another bucket by Matus.  Four FSU points tied the score 84-84 with 10 seconds left.  Johnson gave the Green and Gold a one-point advantage with a free throw at the six-second mark.  FSU missed two field goals in the waning seconds before Idoni's shot attempt with 0.2 seconds left went in.
