Women's Basketball Clinches Tournament Spot With 68-62 Road Win At SVSU

Johnson tallied a career-high 33 points.

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (15-12 overall, 9-10) secured a playoff spot with a 68-62 triumph at Saginaw Valley State University (12-15 overall, 8-11 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The contest was tied four times in the first 7:30, with the last coming at 11-11 following a pair of free throws by senior Sadia Johnson (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Central).  Sophomore Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) followed with an offensive rebound and put back on WSU's next offensive possession.  Johnson then connected from long range for a 16-11 Warrior advantage.

A jumper from junior Tori Perez (Belleville, Mich.) off an assist by Johnson increased the lead to seven (18-11).  A jumper late in the opening stanza by the Cardinals cut the Wayne State margin to five (18-13) after 10 minutes.

After an SVSU free throw, Johnson drained three consecutive triples giving the Warriors a 27-14 lead.  Saginaw Valley scored the next three points, before Johnson made all three free throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt.

The Cardinals scored seven of the final 13 points of the first half to trim WSU's lead to 36-24 at intermission.  Johnson had 17 first half points, which included four triples and 5-of-5 from the charity stripe.

Saginaw Valley scored five of the first seven points of the second half to pull within nine (38-29), before a conventional three-point play by Johnson and two free throws by senior Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep).  SVSU responded by scoring the next eight points to cut the Warrior margin to six (43-37), prior to a layup by freshman Rebecca Fugate (Holly, Mich.).

The Cardinals kept chipping away and were within four (51-47) late in the third quarter, but Johnson connected from long range just before the period ended.

Johnson had a steal and layup to start the fourth quarter scoring to restore a nine-point advantage (56-47).  SVSU's Maddie Maloney drained a triple, prior to Wayne State scoring seven of the next nine points for a 63-52 lead with just over six minutes remaining.  An 8-2 run by SVSU over the next five minutes pulled the hosts within five (65-60) with just under a minute remaining, but that would be as close as the Cardinals would get.
