Wayne State Athletics Releases Statement About Fall Sports

Statement from Wayne State University Director of Athletics Rob Fournier:

"We continue to focus on how our athletic programs might be able to move forward this fall with competition and how best to accomplish that objective with keeping student athletes, coaches and staff in the optimum environment for protection from COVID-19.  We will definitively return to practices this fall for all sports, but the primary question is can we also engage in outside competition?  That is more consequential as it not only depends on our own protections … but that of our opponents.  We must work together to create a setting that continues to emphasize safety and to establish responsible safeguards is that first step."

Wayne State suspended all outside competition on March 12th and has not resumed any practices.  It has been determined that no practices for the fall term for any sport will commence until at least 31 August 2020 allowing the institution time to assimilate students back to campus and meet the initial guidelines for the athletics restart (see webpage).  Part of those protocols requires all student athletes to be initially tested for COVID-19, take and pass the campus test modules and satisfy the daily screener.

The athletic department plans to make another announcement after the GLIAC Council of Presidents meet in mid-August.  There will also be an athletics department virtual meeting for all interested student athletes, staff and coaches to be scheduled after that joint Presidential announcements regarding fall competition.
