Football Inks 26 On National Signing Day

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University football program, under the direction of 18th-year head coach Paul Winters, announced the signing of 22 student-athletes to a National Letter of Intent, plus another four to a Letter of Commitment.

"I am proud to announce the signing class of 2021 for the Wayne State Warrior football team," said Winters.  "This diverse class of young men from the Detroit area, western Michigan area, Ohio (eight) and Illinois (one) will add to the positive culture of Warrior football.  I want to point out the outstanding efforts of our assistant coaches, who had to navigate through a pandemic, and still were able to produce another outstanding class of scholar prospective student-athletes."

Fourteen of the incoming freshman were admitted as Honor student-athletes, receiving academic awards, including five who received the Warrior Award.

"We were able to address the need to improve the depth of our offensive line by recruiting six, big, tough, and athletic offensive linemen, spearheaded by the efforts of our new Offensive Line Coach Joe Hensel," commented Winters.  "We also improved the depth, size, and speed of our wide receiver position by signing three talented young men."

In addition to the six offensive linemen and three wide receivers, WSU added three tight ends, four running backs (two fullbacks and two tailbacks) and two quarterbacks.  Defensively, the Warriors signed two defensive backs, two linebackers, two defensive tackles and two defensive ends.

"The academic reputation of Wayne State University was a driving factor in the decision-making process for this group of prospective student-athletes," remarked Winters.  "The career opportunities, internship placement and the pre-graduation job offers made Wayne State the overwhelming favorites for these young men."
