Volleyball Handles Lakers in Four Sets

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (13-4 overall, 7-2 GLIAC) finished its busy weekend with a four-set victory over Grand Valley State (9-7 overall, 5-3 GLIAC) on Sunday afternoon.  The Warriors won set one (25-22), set three (25-23) and set four (25-17).

HOW IT HAPPENED
The first set was tight throughout and was tied at 5-5 after a GVSU point.  Back-to-back kills from Alexa Withun (Troy, Mich. / Athens) pushed WSU in front 11-9.  A kill from Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) and a service ace from Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) gave the Green & Gold a 19-14 advantage.  The Lakers pulled with one point on two occasions down the stretch, 22-21 and 23-22, but both times WSU answered.  A Morrison kill and an ace by Maddy Benoit (Farmington, Mich. / Mercy) accounted for the final two points, giving the Warriors a 25-22 victory.

WSU led the second set 6-3 but GVSU responded with a 7-0 run to take a 10-6 lead.  Grand Valley State controlled the rest of the set and held onto leads of 20-12, 22-14 and eventually 25-17.

Morrison staked Wayne State to a 6-3 lead to begin the third set.  After the Lakers took a 9-8 lead, the Warriors won three straight points, including two kills from Shell and a block by Shell and Taylor Wagner (St. Joseph, Mich. / Lakeshore).  WSU continued to build momentum and led 18-14.  A point by Jenna Kray (Westerville, Ohio / Worthington Christian)slowed a GVSU comeback attempt and made it 22-19.  The Lakers trailed by one, 23-22, but Morrison collected two more kills to give Wayne State a 25-23 triumph.

Two kills from Wagner and an ace by Julia Malewicz (Macomb, Mich. / Utica Academy for International Studies / Henry Ford II) gave WSU a 3-0 leads to start the fourth set.  The home margin grew to 10-4 following a spike by Wagner.  Wayne State's lead grew to 18-9 after a 5-0 run.  WSU led 23-14 and won 25-17 to capture a 3-1 victory.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Shell and Wagner both had 12 kills, while Shell posted a .600 hitting percentage to go with three blocks.  Morrison was the third Warrior with double-digit kills (10).  Duffield finished with 41 helpers and Benoit had a team-best 14 digs.  Sam Palazzolo (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) tallied 11 digs.
