Women's Basketball Downs Cedarville in Overtime

Shea Tripp scored a career-high 20 points in the victory.

CEDARVILLE, Ohio -- Trailing most of the contest, the Wayne State University women's basketball team (3-0 overall) made enough plays in the fourth quarter and overtime to edge out Cedarville, 85-83.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter

Cedarville jumped out to an early 7-2 lead before Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) and Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) each knocked down triples to give the Warriors an 8-7 edge midway through the first period.  Four of the Green and Gold's six points to end the quarter would come via the free-throw line.  The Warriors trailed 15-14 after the first frame.

Second Quarter
The Warriors and Yellow Jackets traded blows in the second period, with Cedarville holding its one-point lead going into the halftime break.  The scoring really heated up when Tripp checked in around the eight minute mark.  She had seven points in the second stanza, including a triple to give the Warriors a two-point lead midway through the period.  WSU trailed 34-27 with two minutes before halftime but clawed back into the game, thanks to fast break layups by Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville) and Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington), along with a late jumper by Tripp.

Third Quarter
The Yellow Jackets opened things up in the third frame, knocking in four triples at a 57 percent clip.  That allowed Cedarville to build a seven-point lead heading into the final stretch of action.  In the third period, the Warriors had a balanced scoring attack, shooting just under 55 percent for the quarter.  Five different players scored in the third quarter and the Warriors had the game tied at 45.  The Yellow Jackets then went on a 13-6 run to to end the third, with nine of those points coming by way of the long ball.

Fourth Quarter
The Warriors dug deep and found a spark in the final frame of regulation.  Tori Perez (Belleville, Mich.) opened the quarter with a jumper in the paint, with Tripp collecting another three points to cut the Cedarville lead to two just minutes into the fourth quarter.  The two squads traded buckets before an Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) three pointer gave the Warriors a 61-60 advantage with just under seven minutes to go.  As it had all game, Cedarville continued to shoot well from beyond the arc, turning a 61-60 deficit into a 70-65 lead.  As part of that run, the Yellow Jackets hit a pair of triples.  Down the stretch, however, Miller was able to make some big shots, nailing a couple of threes to give the Warriors a one-point lead with 1:15 to play.  The Warriors took a 75-74 lead with a pair of Tripp free throws.  Cedarville responded with a layup on the other end before Tripp knocked home a free throw with three seconds left to send the contest into overtime.

Overtime
Cherney got the scoring started with an opening possession layup before Cedarville tied the game with a pair of free throws.  Then Miller was able to knock down her fifth triple of the game to give the Warriors a three-point edge with just under four minutes to play.  The Green and Gold would then make enough free throws down the stretch to hold off the charging Yellow Jackets.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 51 percent (29-of-57) from the field and 50 percent (8-of-16) from downtown.  The Yellow Jackets made 14 three pointers on 48 percent (14-of-29) shooting, while hitting 39 percent (26-of-67) of their shots from the field.  WSU controlled the rebounding edge 39-32 but did commit 21 turnovers to Cedarville's 17.  The Warriors did wreak havoc on defense, posting nine blocks compared to just one for the Yellow Jackets.  Both teams had eight steals.

Tripp paced the team in points, tallying 20, while adding six rebounds.  Six of those points came via the three-point shot, where she was 2-of-2.  Aiding the attack was Miller, who poured in 18 points to go along with three blocks.  She had five threes on the night. Cherney added 16 points and a game high nine rebounds, while Perez and Sherwood combined to give the Warriors 24 more points.
