Women's Basketball Stays Unbeaten with Win Over Central State

Five Warriors had double-digit scoring totals.

DETROIT -- Using a strong first half, where it led Central State 59-21, the Wayne State University women's basketball team cruised to a 102-51 victory to remain unbeaten.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) opened the scoring with a layup in the opening seconds of the contest, and the Warriors never looked back from there.  The Green and Gold were in command of the game, 17-4, midway through the first quarter.  From there, Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) buried a three, Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) added a layup and the Warriors sunk four more free throws to lead 27-14 after one stanza.

Second Quarter
WSU opened the second period on a 22-3 run, beginning with a pair of buckets from Cherney and Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.).  In her first game on the season, Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.) got in the scoring column, which was followed by a Cherney layup and five straight points from Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville).  Alyssa Leister (St. Louis, Mich. / Alma) would cap off the run, scoring two of her career-high 15 points.  The Warriors would get another basket from Leister with 51 seconds left in the first half.  Then, Emma Anderson (Menominee, Mich.) sank a jumper in the closing seconds of the period to push the Warriors' lead to 59-21.

Third Quarter
After a pair of free throws by Sherwood to open the third quarter, Miller and Fugate sank back-to-back triples to elevate the Warriors' lead to 67-23.  Fugate added another three pointer, which was followed by a Tori Perez (Belleville, Mich.) layup to push the score to 72-27 midway through the quarter.  Leister banked in a layup and split a pair of free throws to close the third period, with the Warriors leading 81-42.

Fourth Quarter
Perez and Leister had a pair of layups to open the scoring in the final frame.  A Halle Barnett (Toledo, Ohio / Sylvania Southview) layup was then followed by back-to-back triples from Anderson and Leister to push the Green and Gold's advantage to 93-46. Ally Shagena (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) joined the scoring fun, hitting her first shot of the season, which was a three pointer to put the Warriors up 99-48 with just over two minutes to play.  Another Anderson jumper and a free throw by Leister would close out the contest.  The Warriors remained unbeaten with a 102-51 victory.
