Women's Basketball Upended By Sixth-Ranked Ashland, 71-59

Cherney eclipses school record for career rebounds.

ASHLAND, Ohio – The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (4-1 overall) closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 71-59 setback at sixth-ranked Ashland University (4-1 overall) on Sunday afternoon.  WSU, who was receiving votes in the WBCA Division II Coaches Poll released earlier in the week, suffered its first loss of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Both teams started slowly in their first action after the Thanksgiving holiday as neither team would score for the first two-plus minutes.  The host Eagles then tallied seven straight points, including the final five by Hallie Heidemann.

The Warriors finally scored with 4:33 left in the opening stanza on a bucket by senior Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington).  Junior Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) drained two triples sandwiched around a pair of free throws by senior Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville) to pull Wayne State within 13-11, but Ashland's Annie Roshak would score six points in the final 64 seconds of the quarter giving the hosts a 19-13 edge after 10 minutes.

Second Quarter
AU made three triples in the first 2:45 of the second period to extend its advantage to 28-18.  Ashland's Karlee Pireu made two baskets sandwiched around a Sherwood hoop making the score 32-20 just past the mid-point of the quarter.

Wayne State managed just two field goals the rest of the half on buckets by graduate student Tori Perez (Belleville, Mich.) and junior Maxine Moore (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Country Day), while the Eagles totaled 10 points to lead 42-24 at intermission.

Third Quarter
After being credited with two rebounds in the opening half, Cherney grabbed four boards in the first 90 seconds after halftime to break the WSU all-time rebounding record previously held by Shareta Brown.  The Warriors scored the first five points of the period forcing AU to call a timeout.

Over the next nearly four minutes, scoring was at a premium with the Eagles scoring four of the six points for a 46-31 lead.

However, the last five minutes of the stanza was a different story as the teams combined for 31 points (AU 17-14) giving the host Eagles a 63-45 edge after 30 minutes.  Senior Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) and freshman Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) each had five points over the final four minutes of the quarter.

Fourth Quarter
Wayne State's defense limited Ashland to just two made field goals in the period as the Warriors won the quarter 14-8.  WSU made just three field goals but were 7-of-10 from the charity stripe.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 42 percent (22-of-52) from the floor, compared to 39 percent (24-of-61) for AU.  WSU connected on 5-of-14 triple tries (36 percent), with the Eagles making 9-of-25 (36 percent) from beyond the arc.  The Warriors were just 10-of-17 (59 percent) from the foul line, while Ashland was an impressive 14-of-15 (93 percent).  Wayne State had a 38-33 edge in rebounding, but 23 Warrior turnovers led to a 19-4 advantage for Ashland in points off turnovers.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Cherney notched her third double-double of the campaign with 11 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.  Fugate tallied a team-best 12 points, while Sherwood contributed 11 points, and Miller dished out four assists.
