Women's Basketball Opens GLIAC Play With Victory At Davenport

The Warriors play at Grand Valley State on Dec. 4 at 1 PM.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- In its first action of conference play, the Wayne State University women's basketball team (5-1 overall, 1-0 GLIAC) went on the road to defeat Davenport University (0-5 overall, 0-1 GLIAC), 58-50, on Thursday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Graduate student Tori Perez (Belleville, Mich.) began the scoring, with a driving layup on the Warriors' first possession of the game.  After another Perez layup, senior Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) collected an offensive rebound and put it back in to give the Warriors a 6-4 advantage just two minutes into the game.  In response to WSU's early offense, the Panthers went on a 6-0 run and held the Warriors scoreless for three minutes before a layup by senior Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville) stopped the shooting slump.  The Warriors trailed 10-8 midway through the first period.  Immediately following the media timeout, junior Maxine Moore (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Country Day) drained an elbow jumper to knot the score at 10-10.  The Green and Gold finished the frame with just one make from the field.  Senior Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) split a pair of free throws, while junior Kate McArthur (Warren, Mich. / Cousino) hit a shot from beyond the arc to end the shooting skid.  Davenport led 17-14 after the first quarter.

Second Quarter
McArthur found Cherney slashing to the basket to open the period with a bucket.  Then junior Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) added a layup to give the Warriors an 18-17 lead just minutes into the second stanza.  Fugate followed with a triple, which forced the Panthers into a timeout at the 7:56 mark of the quarter.  Scout Nelson scored four straight points to help the Panthers draw even at 21-21 midway through the period.  Seconds after Nelson's layup, Sherwood split a pair of free throws and Cherney made a hook shot to regain the lead.  A steal by freshman Alyssa Leister (St. Louis, Mich. / Alma) set up a Fugate layup to extend WSU's advantage to 26-21 with two minutes left in the first half.  Davenport then collected baskets on back-to-back possessions to draw within one.  The Green and Gold would take a 28-27 lead into the break.

Third Quarter
Perez opened the third period scoring with a layup off a dish from Fugate.  However, the Panthers would score the next five points to take a 32-30 lead with just over seven minutes to play in the stanza.  Moore would split a pair of free throws to stop the scoreless streak, but a Panthers three stretched their lead to 35-31 midway through the quarter.  Moore and Sherwood made back-to-back baskets after the media timeout to tie the score at 35-35.  Neither team could gain an advantage the rest of the frame, and the squads entered the fourth quarter tied at 39-39.

Fourth Quarter
The Panthers and Warriors each scored a basket in the opening two minutes of the final period, making the score 41-41.  Neither team would score from the field over the next two minutes, but Davenport built a 45-41 lead by draining four free throws.  Sherwood banked in a layup to bring the Warriors within two, but Loni Sales hit a floater to put the Panthers back up by four with just over five minutes left in regulation.  Senior Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.) notched her first points of the game at a crucial time, as she banked in a layup to shrink the Davenport lead to 47-45 just before the final media timeout of the contest.  Following the break, Sherwood drained a jumper to even the score at 47-47 with three minutes to play.  Fugate added a pair of free throws at the two-minute mark to give the Warriors the lead for good.  Leister drained a three-point shot to extend the Green and Gold's lead to five, forcing a Panthers timeout with 1:06 left to play.  Just a few plays later, Fugate would come away with a steal and layup, forcing another Davenport timeout.  The Warriors would close out the game with free throws and collect a 58-50 victory.

TEAM STATS
Davenport took 20 more shots than the Warriors, but the Green and Gold were far more effective from the field.  WSU shot 41 percent (20-of-49) from the field, while the Panthers hit just 29 percent (20-of-69) of their shots.  Neither team could gain a rebounding edge, as the two squads finished with 43 boards apiece.  However, the Panthers had an 18-9 advantage on the offensive glass.  Wayne State had 23 turnovers compared to Davenport's 20.
