Women's Basketball Tops Ferris State, 59-54

Becca Fugate had a team-high 13 points.

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (11-7 overall and GLIAC) won its last game of the regular season, 59-54, at Ferris State (6-12 overall and GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon to earn the No. 5 seed for the upcoming GLIAC Tournament.  The Warriors finished in a three-way tie for third in winning percentage, but were ranked fifth on the Point Ranking System which factors not only wins but also strength of schedule.

FIRST HALF
Senior Kara Wilson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) would score first for the Warriors on an offensive rebound and put back for the first tie of the game at 2-2.

The Bulldogs would go on a five point scoring spurt to take a 7-2 lead.  Junior Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) made a three pointer bringing the Green and Gold within two (7-5).

At the 4:19 mark, freshman Jolee Houle (Zeeland, Mich. / Grand Haven) would tie the game on a lay-up (7-7).

In the final 4:06 of the opening stanza, Ferris State would outscore the Warriors six to four taking the lead by two, 13-11, after 10 minutes.

WSU would start off the second period with two free throws from junior Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) to tie the game at 13-13.

The Bulldogs Samantha Krauss would score on a jump shot giving the hosts the lead with 6:58 left (15-13).

Senior Anna Ruhstorfer (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Flint Powers Catholic) would make a three pointer putting WSU ahead for the first time (16-15) with just under six minutes remaining before intermission.

With 2:47 left, Miller would make a lay-up to put the Warriors up by three (22-19) after Ferris State had pulled within one.

At the 1:42 mark, Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) made a three-pointer to extend the Green and Golds lead to five (25-20).

The Warriors would lead 26-22 at intermission.

SECOND HALF
The Warriors would open the third period scoring five consecutive points to push the lead to nine (31-22).

FSU's Kadyn Blanchard would break the five-point WSU run by making two free throws with 7:09 left cutting the Wayne State lead to seven (31-24).

At the 5:43 mark, Wilson made a lay-up to regain a nine-point advantage (33-24).

FSU would outscore the Warriors 14-7 over the final 5:30 of the third quarter, which included Blanchard's triple in the waning seconds that trimmed the WSU lead to two (40-38).

At the start of the fourth, Miller would make a three-point jump shot and with 9:01 left, senior Tori Perez (Belleville, Mich.) would make a lay-up putting the lead to seven (45-38).  The Bulldogs' Krauss would respond with a three pointer to keep the hosts within striking distance (45-41).

Following an FSU free throw, freshman Halle Barnett (Toledo, Ohio / Sylvania Southview) would start an 8-0 run by the Warriors that included a conventional three-point play by Fugate and a triple by Perez.  WSU's 11-point lead (53-42) didn't last long as Ferris State would score 10 of the next 12 points cutting the Wayne State margin to three (55-52) with just under two minutes remaining.

A Ruhstorfer jumper preceded a pair of foul shots by Blanchard, which made it a three-point contest (57-54) with 21 seconds left.

Fugate made two free throws in the final 15 seconds to seal the road win.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Fugate led with a team-high 13 points and two steals.  Miller contributed 10 points, while Cherney had eight points, a game-high 10 rebounds and a team-best three assists.

LEADING THE BULLDOGS
Blanchard totaled a game-high 21 points, along with a team-best nine rebounds.  Krauss chipped in with 13 points.

TEAM STATS
Both teams shot 32 percent from the floor as Wayne State was 18-of-57, compared to FSU's 19-of-59.  WSU shot 28 percent (5-of-18) from the three point range, while the Bulldogs were limited to 29 percent (6-of-21) from beyond the arc.  The Warriors made 18-of-21 (86 percent) free throw attempts, while Ferris State was 10-of-13 (77 percent) from the charity stripe.  The Bulldogs won the rebounding battled 42-38.

UP NEXT
The Warriors will host the 12th-seeded Lake Superior State Lakers on Tuesday, March 2nd with tip-off time still to be determined.
