Women's Basketball Drops Contest, 81-64, at Purdue Northwest

Hammond, Ind.—The Wayne State University women's basketball team (5-6 Overall, 5-6 GLIAC) suffered an 81-64 setback at Purdue Northwest (3-8 Overall, 3-8 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon. 

FIRST HALF RECAP
After a Pride basket to start the contest, WSU senior Tori Perez (Belleville, Mich.) had back-to back-jumpers with assists from Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville) and Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.).

Sherwood and Perez scored sandwiched around a PNW lay-up to push the Warrior lead to 8-4.

The Warriors allowed a Pride jumper, but Miller responded with a three pointer to extend the lead to 11-6 at the 5:41 mark.

Over the next 90 second, Purdue Northwest would go on an 11-2 run to take a 17-13 lead with 3:08 left in the first period.

Wayne State regained the lead, 18-17, at the 2:07 mark.after five consecutive points on a jumper by Kara Wilson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) and a triple by Perez.

Purdue Northwest's Savaya Brockington would make the final two shots of the first stanza giving the hosts a 21-18 advantage after 10 minutes.

A second quarter jumper from Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) off an assist from Wilson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) pulled WSU within three (23-20).

The Pride would go on to score the next 10 out of 14 points making the score 33-24 with just over five minutes remaining in the first half.

Over the next four minutes, WSU would score seven consecutive points to cut its deficit to two (33-31), concluding on a triple by Chenelle King (Flint, Mich. / Carman-Ainsworth).

PNW would score in the finals seconds on a Brockington lay-up to close out the half with a 35-31 lead.

SECOND HALF RECAP
Purdue Northwest made two triples early in the second half, but Fugate responded with a three pointer off a Miller assist at the 8:59 mark to bring the Warriors within seven (41-34).

Perez scored five straight points to bring WSU within five (46-41) at the 4:58 mark of the third quarter.

In the last 4:01 of the third, the Pride would outscore the Warriors 13-8 to extend their lead to 10 (59-49) heading into the fourth period.

Sherwood would open the fourth quarter with a jumper to make the score 59-51.

Perez scored the next seven Warrior points but WSU still trailed by seven (65-58) with just over seven minutes left in the game.

A Brockington lay-up with 5:04 remaining gave the hosts another 10-point margin (69-59).

A jumper by Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) cut the deficit to eight (69-61), but Brockington connected from long range igniting a 9-1 Pride run over the next two minutes.

WSU fell 81-64.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Perez led with a team and season high 26 points and nine rebounds.  Sherwood helped with 10 points and a team-high five assists.  Cherney and King each had eight points with Cherney chipping in with nine rebounds.

LEADING THE PRIDE
Brockington had a game-high 37 points.  Anjel Galbraith contributed 14 points and a game-best seven assists.  Molly Devalkenaere finished with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

TEAM STATS
WSU shot 45 percent (24-of-53) from the floor, including 6-of-14 (43 percent) from beyond the arc.  Meanwhile Purdue Northwest made 55 percent (33-of-60) of its field goal attempts, including 50 percent (10-of-20) from three-point range.  Wayne State led in rebounds 31-28, but the Pride had just six turnovers to the Warriors 11.

UP NEXT
The Warriors will host Parkside on Friday, Feb. 12th, with tip-off scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at the Matthaei.
