Women's Track and Field Participates At Al Owens Classic

Throwers competed at Oakland Grizzly PR Classic.

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's outdoor track and field squad competed at the 2021 Al Owens Classic hosted by Grand Valley State University on Saturday.

TOP PERFORMANCES
Sophomore Mikayla Williams (St. Charles, Mich.) notched two top-10 performances in program history. She placed third in the long jump (5.43m) and tied-for-12th in the high jump (1.49m). The long jump mark is third in WSU history, while the high jump is sixth.

Graduate student Sydney Benson (Harper Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) posted the second-fastest time for 800m (2:13.15) in winning the event.

Senior Gabbi Willett (Holgate, Ohio) led seven Warriors in the 1500m race placing 19th in a time of 4:55.16, which ranks eighth in program history.

Freshman Abigail Dunn (Northville, Mich.) recorded the ninth-fastest 400m hurdles time (1:09.40) in placing seventh.

OTHER PERFORMANCES
Senior Emma Willett (Holgate, Ohio) won the 5000m race in a time of 18:50.13, while graduate student Teresa Diehl (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / Warren Regina) placed fourth (19:08.77). Sophomore Makenzie Wank (Richland, Mich. / Gull Lake) finished ninth (20:16.21).

Sophomore Makayla Sumrall (Roseville, Mich.) placed third in the 100m dash (12.10), while junior Aliyah McDonald (Kingston, Jamaica) finished seventh (12.66). McDonald also had a second-place finish in the 100m hurdles (14.91).

The 4x400m relay quartet of junior Yasmine Affes (Northville, Mich.), Benson, senior Lyndsey Braman (Flint, Mich. / Powers Catholic) and Dunn placed fourth.

WSU's two participants in the 200m dash placed sixth and seventh, respectively with Sumrall running a 25.83 and McDonald clocking in at 26.16.

Affes was ninth in the 400m race (1:01.09).

THREE THROWERS COMPETED AT THE OAKLAND GRIZZLY PR CLASSIC ON SATURDAY.
Junior Kaleigh Flowers (Grand Rapids, Mich. / East Kentwood) led a trio of Warriors in the hammer throw placing eighth with a personal-best throw of 42.16m on her sixth and final attempt. Senior Maddie Schmoker (Kellogg, Minn. / Wabasha-Kellogg) was 11th (38.88m) and junior Izzy Taylor (Three Rivers, Mich.) was 15th (36.70m). All three marks are in the top 10 in school history.

Taylor placed third in the shot put with a toss of 12.21m, while Schmoker finished ninth (10.98m). Flowers was 14th in the discus with a throw of 26.29m.

UP NEXT
Wayne State is scheduled to have participants in the Hillsdale Gina Relays on Thursday and Friday.
