DETROIT -- The 2021 Wayne State University football campaign commences with a pair of home games against teams that went a combined 23-3 in 2019. The home opener is on Thursday, September 2nd with a 6 p.m. kickoff vs. Slippery Rock. The Rock went 13-1 in 2019 and advanced to the national semifinals. The Bulldogs of Truman State will be the week two opponent for a 1 p.m. start on Saturday, September 11th. TSU went 10-2 in 2019 and 3-1 during the spring 2021 season. WSU is 2-2 all-time vs. Slippery Rock and 3-3 against TSU (formerly known as Northeast Missouri State).
Wayne State will play Missouri S&T for the first time ever in football on September 18th in Rolla, Mo., before returning home for a non-conference game vs. Saginaw Valley State on September 25th, which is Hall of Fame Day. The contest vs. the Cardinals will have a 6 p.m. kickoff.
After a trip to the Superior Dome to face the Northern Michigan Wildcats on October 2nd, the Warriors will entertain Michigan Tech for the 84th Homecoming contest on October 9th. The match-up vs. the Huskies will begin at 6 p.m. The cancelation of the 2020 Homecoming game was the first since World War II in 1944 canceled that year's Homecoming contest.
WSU will be on the road for the next two weeks visiting Davenport (October 16th) and Saginaw Valley State (October 23rd).
Wayne State returns home for GLIAC games versus Northwood (October 30th) and Grand Valley State (November 6th), before concluding the regular season at Ferris State on November 13th. The match-up vs. the Timberwolves will start at 6 p.m. and is the final contest as GLIAC rivals before NU moves to the GMAC in 2022. The regular-season home finale against the Lakers will have a 1 p.m. start.
