Men's Basketball Drops Fifth Straight

The Warriors made a late comeback attempt but ran out of time.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball program (2-9, 1-7 GLIAC) lost its fifth consecutive game on Saturday, 88-78, versus Northern Michigan (7-8, 3-5 GLIAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Wildcats led 9-4 at the 18:13 mark.  A three-pointer by Antonio Marshall (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) brought WSU within three but NMU was hot from behind the arc and stretched its advantage to 21-10 with 12:39 left before halftime.  A layup by David Hughes (Southfield, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) made it 26-18 in favor of the Wildcats at the 9:11 mark.  Another Marshall triple cut the deficit to eight, 31-23,  The Warriors trailed 42-23 at the 3:17 mark and 46-32 at halftime.  Brailen Neely (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) connected on a triple at the end of the half.

The Green & Gold began to chip away at NMU's lead and an Avery Lewis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) jumper brought WSU within 13, 54-41, at the 15:45 mark.  Another two points from Lewis made it 60-46 with 10:59 left to play.  A long-ranger jumper from Kylin Grant (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) trimmed Northern Michigan's advantage to 68-60 at the 5:27 mark.  Darian Owens-White (Detroit, Mich. / River Rouge) made two free throws to keep it an eight-point contest.  WSU trailed 76-69 with 1:52 remaining after Lewis sunk one of two at the charity stripe.  That would be as close as the Warriors would get as the Wildcats would collect a 88-78 road victory.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Neely paced the WSU attack with 20 points and six assists, while Marshall finished with 18 points, making all five of his three-point attempts.  Lewis had 11 points and Owens-White tallied 10.

LEADING THE WILDCATS
John Kerr scored a game-high 21 points to go with 17 rebounds, while Carson Smith added 14 points.  Nick Wagner contributed 11 points.

ONE BIG THING
Despite their best three-point shooting performance of the season (11-of-18 / 61 percent), the Warriors were unable to slow down NMU's offense.  The Wildcats were bolstered by a 21-of-30 (70 percent) performance at the free throw line.

UP NEXT
WSU will play at Parkside on Thursday at 8:30 PM ET.
