Volleyball Claims 3-2 Road Victory at Ferris State

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (14-9, 7-5 GLIAC) won in five sets at Ferris State (15-9, 10-2 GLIAC) on Thursday night.  WSU won the first set 25-22, before dropping the next two sets 25-18 and 25-13.  The Warriors forced a fifth and deciding set with a 25-22 triumph in the fourth set.  In the fifth set, Wayne State rallied from a 17-16 deficit to claim the final three points for a 19-17 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The first set was tied on 10 different occasions in the first 34 points, with WSU having the largest lead of three points at 7-4.  The Bulldogs won five of the next seven points after the 17-17 deadlock for a 22-19 advantage.  However, the Warriors responded winning the next six points to notch a win in the first set.  Freshman Kayla Giroux (Flat Rock, Mich.) started the scoring spree with a kill, and after an FSU attack error, senior Maddy Benoit (Farmington, Mich. / Mercy) had back-to-back service aces for a 23-22 Wayne State lead.  Graduate student Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.) concluded with set with consecutive kills.

The second set was tied at 1-1, 2-2 and 3-3, prior to Ferris State tallying six of the next eight points for a 9-5 lead.  The squads alternated the next six points with WSU getting no closer than three points the rest of the set.  FSU hit .333 in the set compared to .098 for the Warriors.

The Bulldogs tallied four of the first five points of the third set, before a Wayne State rally cut the deficit to one at 5-4.  A 5-0 run by Ferris State gave the hosts a 10-4 advantage.  WSU trailed by as many 12 points before back-to-back kills by VanderWal late in the match cut the margin to 10 (23-13).  FSu finished the set with a pair of points.  The Bulldogs hit .440 for the set, while Wayne State had 10 kills and 10 errors to hit .000.

WSU never trailed in the fourth set.  The Warriors began with a 4-1 spurt and led by six at 16-10, before five consecutive points by the Bulldogs trimmed the Wayne State advantage to one (16-15).  FSU pulled within a point on multiple occasions (21-20 and 22-21), but WSU ended up recording nine of the final 16 points for the 25-22 victory.

Ferris State didn't trail in the early stages of the fifth set and led 6-3, prior to the Warriors winning seven of the next 10 points to take a 10-9 lead (its first lead of the set).  FSU claimed the next four points for a 13-10 advantage.  Wayne State garnered the next four points, which included a couple of kills by senior Maddie Morrison (Flushing, Mich.).  After the Bulldogs grabbed a 17-16, WSU won the final three points.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
VanderWal recorded a team-high 16 kills, while Giroux contributed 15 kills, while hitting a team-best .375.  Graduate student Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) and junior Alexa Withun (Troy, Mich. / Athens) each chipped in with nine kills.

Graduate student Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) totaled 46 assists with VanderWal completing her double-double with 12 digs.  Benoit tallied a match-high 31 digs, along with three service aces.  Giroux (3-2) and Shell (1-4) each were part of five blocks.
