HILLSDALE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (0-1 overall) officially began its 2022-23 campaign Friday evening with a 66-64 setback at Hillsdale College (3-0 overall) as part of the GLIAC/GMAC Challenge.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
The host Chargers scored the first six points before freshman Carmelo Harris (Flint, Mich. / Beecher) split a pair from the charity stripe at the 16:08 mark.  A jumper by junior Kaimen Lennox (Kansas City, Mo. / Truman) cut the deficit to three (6-3) before HC scored the next six points for a 12-3 advantage.

Redshirt senior Antonio Marshall (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) made a jumper, preceding back-to-back jumpers by Harris to make it 12-9.  A triple by Marshall with just under eight minutes remaining in the first half pulled the Warriors to within two at 16-14.  Four minutes later, an offensive rebound and put-back by senior Nate Talbot (Lake Orion, Mich.) made it a one-point contest at 23-22.

On WSU's next possession, Harris connected from long range to knot the game at 25-25.  After an offensive foul on Hillsdale, graduate student Cortez Jackson (Harper Woods, Mich. / St. Clair Shores Lakeview) scored on a lay-up giving WSU its first lead of the game at 27-25.  The Chargers ended the opening half on a 4-0 run to lead 29-27 at intermission.

Second Half
A Talbot lay-up tied the game at 29-20 and Lennox drained a three-pointer the next trip down the court.  Another Talbot bucket concluded the 7-0 run.  Wayne State led 38-32 and over the next nine minutes out-scored the hosts 17-14 for a 55-46 lead with 9:32 remaining.

HC had a 6-0 spurt before a jumper by Marshall pushed the lead to five at 57-52 with just over 5:30 left.  Wayne State went scoreless for the next 2:30, while Hillsdale tallied nine consecutive points for 61-57 lead before Marshall connected from beyond the arc making it a one-point game at 61-60.

Two free throws by Talbot with 2:01 left gave the Warriors the lead at 62-61.  HC's Jack Gohlke made a jumper 17 seconds later before Lennox continued the lead changes with a jumper at the 1:21 mark.

Hillsdale's Kyle Goessler made a lay-up with 14 seconds left, then following a WSU turnover, he made one of two free throw attempts with five seconds left to complete the scoring.
