Women's Basketball Falls to Ashland in Season Opener

Wayne State will face Malone on Sunday.

DETROIT -- In its season-opening game of the 2022-23 season, the Wayne State University women's basketball team (0-1 overall) fell to Ashland (1-0 overall) by a final score of 87-61.  The Warriors will return to the Wayne State Fieldhouse on Sunday to square off with Malone.

FIRST QUARTER
The Eagles blitzed the Warriors in the opening few minutes of the game, as Ashland sprinted out to a 26-8 advantage.  In the quarter, Ashland made 10 field goals compared to WSU's three.  Getting buckets for the Warriors were Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.), Thaya Luse (Elburn, Ill. / Example Academy) and Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center).  Ashley Bower (Portland, Mich.) and Luse each split a pair of free throws.

SECOND QUARTER
Wayne State's fortune didn't change much in the second period, as the Eagles were able to extend their lead to 46-20 at the half.  Alyssa Leister (St. Louis, Mich. / Alma) and Maxine Moore (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Country Day) were the only Warriors to score in the second stanza, with Leister pouring three baskets and Moore aiding the attack with a pair of two-point buckets.  Ashland had a wealth of scoring in the second quarter, as six different players scored a basket for the Eagles.

THIRD QUARTER
The Warriors opened the third frame on a 13-5 run, capped off with a Fugate three-point play to make the score 51-33 in favor of the visitors.  But that's the closest the Green and Gold would get, as Ashland continued to find ways to score.  The Warriors made eight baskets in the quarter, while Ashland made 11.  Each team scored 26 points and the visiting Eagles took a 72-46 lead into the final 10 minutes.

FOURTH QUARTER
A Hayley Smith layup pushed Ashland in front 81-48 with just over eight minutes to play in the game.  But a Tripp layup at the 4:56 mark of the stanza capped off an 11-0 WSU run, making the score 81-59 in favor of the Eagles.  But the run was too little too late for the Warriors, as Ashland closed out an 87-61 victory.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Leister led the Green and Gold in scoring, tallying 15 points.  Aiding the attack were Tripp, Fugate and Moore who all reached double digits.

LEADING THE EAGLES
Zoe Miller led the entire game in scoring, pouring in 22 points.  Four other scorers reachd double figures for the Eagles, including Maddie Maloney, who added 14 points.
