Softball To Host Hitting, Pitching and Catching Camps

The Wayne State University softball program will host four days of camps this January and February starting with two sessions of a Hitting Camp on Sunday, Jan 15.  Participants will receive instruction on hitting and bunting techniques with an opportunity to practice the techniques through drills and station work.  Camp is limited to those softball players currently in grades 4 through 12.

The first session will be from 9:00 a.m. until noon, with the second session taking place from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.  The cost is $65 per participant with pre-registration, and $75 at the door.  If 10 or more register together, the cost will be $50 per person.  Camp size is limited to the first 80 to register for each session.

The Pitching and Catching Camps will consist of three consecutive Sundays (Jan. 22, Jan. 29 and Feb. 5) with two sessions each day.  The pre-registration price of $100 confirms your spot for all three Sundays.  The cost is $115 for registering at the door.

The first pitching session each camp day will run from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. and is for the development of basic pitching techniques.  Emphasis is placed on developing a fastball with speed and control, along with the change-up pitch.  This session is recommended for young throwers at the elementary, middle school, freshman and JV high school level.  These camps are limited to those softball players currently in grades 4 through 12.

Session 2 for pitchers, which runs from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. is designed to develop various pitches including the fastball, change-up, rise and drop.  Emphasis is placed on pitch location, selection and strategies.  This session is recommended for varsity high school pitchers.

Session 1 for the Catching Camp is for the development of beginning catching skills.  Emphasis is placed on proper catching techniques, including proper positioning, throwing and blocking wild pitches.  Catchers will have an opportunity to catch live pitchers.  This session is recommended for catchers at the elementary, middle school, freshman and JV high school level.

Session 2 is designed to develop proper catching techniques, along with developing an understanding of how to call pitches during a game.  Catchers will have an opportunity to catch live pitchers.  This session is recommended for varsity high school catchers.

All catchers must supply their own mask.  Chest protector and shin guards are recommended.

Participants are required to complete both the concussion form (wsuathletics.com/concussionform (PDF)) and the health form (wsuathletics.com/campform (PDF)).
