Men's Basketball Upended 66-52 By Parkside

Marshall leads WSU with 15 points.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (4-5 overall, 1-2 GLIAC) concluded its pre-exam slate with a 66-52 setback to visiting Wisconsin-Parkside (9-2 overall, 4-0 GLIAC) Sunday afternoon at the Wayne State Fieldhouse.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
The Rangers scored on two of their first three possessions for a 4-0 lead, and after a jumper by junior Ray Williams, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy), UWP's Colin O'Rourke connected twice in 70 seconds from beyond the arc giving the guests a 10-2 advantage.  The margin was 14 (16-2) following a triple by Parkside's Sanmi Fajana with 13:10 left in the half.

Two free throws by junior Kaimen Lennox (Kansas City, Mo. / Truman HS) ended the scoreless drought of 5:30 by the Warriors.  WSU's deficit remained between 11 and 14 points until a 7-0 run by the Rangers extended the difference to 20 (34-14) with 3:15 left before intermission.  A jumper by freshman Matt Coffey (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) and two foul shots by senior Antonio Marshall (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) cut the margin to 16.  Parkside led 38-21 at the break after shooting 57 percent (13-of-23) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, including 5-of-8 from three-point range.

Second Half
UWP had its largest lead of the game at 52-28 (24 points) with 15:08 left in the contest after out-scoring Wayne State 14-7 to start the second half.

An 8-0 spurt by WSU, included six points from Williams, Jr. and a bucket by Coffey, reduced the margin to 16 (52-36) with 11:22 remaining.

The Rangers led 59-40 with just over nine minutes left, but a driving lay-up by graduate student Cortez Jackson (Harper Woods, Mich. / St. Clair Shores Lake Shore), a defensive rebound and a coast-to-coast fast break lay-up by Avery Lewis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron), and a triple by Marshall made it a 12-point game at 59-47 with just over five minutes remaining.

Another Marshall three-pointer after an offensive rebound by Williams, Jr. cut the margin to 10 (60-50) with 3:50 left.  Six consecutive points by Parkside sealed the win.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 32 percent (21-of-65) from the field, compared to UWP's 48 percent (23-of-48).  WSU was just 4-of-22 (18 percent) from beyond the arc, while the Rangers connected on 6-of-13 (46 percent) three-point attempts.  The Warriors made 6-of-8 (75 percent) from the charity stripe, with Parkside shooting 74 percent (14-of-19) from the foul line.  UWP had a 42-30 edge in rebounding.  Wayne State had just four turnovers.
