Men's Basketball Falls 75-66 At Saginaw Valley

Warriors out-scored 47-20 in the second half.

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Wayne State University men's basketball team (2-4 overall, 0-1 GLIAC) played its first conference contest under first-year head coach Bryan Smothers on Saturday at Saginaw Valley State University (4-4 overall, 1-0 GLIAC) with the Cardinals prevailing 75-66.  It was a tale of two halves as WSU won the first half 46-28, but SVSU out-scored the Warriors 47-20 over the final 20 minutes.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
There were six lead changes in the first 9:05, with the last one occurring as freshman Carmelo Harris (Flint, Mich. / Beecher) drained at triple turning a 17-16 deficit, into a 19-17 advantage.

After the Cardinals knotted the contest at 19-19, the Warriors scored seven of the next eight points for a 26-20 lead.  Senior Avery Lewis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) had a pair of buckets sandwiched around another shot from beyond the arc by Harris.

WSU extended its margin to 10 (30-20) with 7:10 left before intermission.  Saginaw Valley would pull within six (34-28) after a four-point possession (two field goals book-ending a Wayne State foul), but the Cardinals would not score the final 4:19 of the half.

The Warriors tallied the final 12 points to lead 46-28 at the break.  Three WSU players scored in double figures in the opening 20 minutes led by senior Antonio Marshall's (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) game-high 17 points.  Both Lewis and Harris notched 10 points in the first half.  Wayne State shot 56 percent (18-of-32) from the floor before halftime.

Second Half
Wayne State had an 18-point advantage (49-31) after a triple by Marshall less than a minute after intermission.  Saginaw Valley scored the next five minutes before a jumper by junior Kaimen Lennox (Kansas City, Mo. / Truman HS).  WSU led 56-41 after two free throws by Lewis, but the Cardinals responded with a 17-0 run to grab a 58-56 advantage just past the mid-point of the half.

A lay-up by Ray Williams, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) tied the game at 58-58.  It was the Warriors first field goal in nearly eight minutes.

SVSU scored six of the next seven points for a 64-59 advantage.   Even though Wayne State did not make a field goal in the final 4:40, the Warriors still had a chance to tie with 3:26 remaining, but Marshall split a pair from the charity stripe.

Saginaw Valley sealed the win by making seven of its final eight foul shots.
