Women's Basketball Falls to Saginaw Valley State in GLIAC Opener

Three Warriors reached double-figure scoring marks.

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team had its five-game winning streak snapped with a 72-68 loss to Saginaw Valley State this afternoon inside the James E. O'Neill Arena.

FIRST QUARTER
The two teams opened the game with a pair of layups, with Ashley Bower (Portland, Mich.) scoring the opening bucket for WSU on a pass from Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich / Michigan Center).  Bower then collected an assist on a triple by Kate McArthur (Warren, Mich. / Cousino) to put the Warriors in front 5-4 early in the opening frame.  From there, SVSU would go on a mini 4-0 run to jump in front 8-5.  Another McArthur triple put a stop to the Cardinals' spurt and knotted the game at 8-8 with 6:55 to play in the opening stanza.  Taylor Thompson (Grand Blanc, Mich.) would eventually put the visiting Warriors in front 10-8 with a layup at the 5:14 mark of the period.  Moments after the media timeout, Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) extended the Green and Gold's lead to 12-8 with her first basket of the contest.

That was followed by a Tripp layup to make the score 14-8 in favor of the visitors.  As the quarter began to wind down, Bower continued the Warriors' scoring outburst by hitting a pair of free throws to push WSU's advantage to 16-8 with 1:35 to play in the first quarter.  The 11-0 run would eventually be stopped by Katilyn Zarycki, who was able to convert a three-point play to bring the Cardinals back within five (16-11).  That stopped a field goal drought for the Cardinals that spanned more than seven minutes.  WSU took that five-point advantage into the second quarter.

SECOND QUARTER
Bower immediately extended the Warriors' advantage to seven (18-11) with a layup in the opening seconds of the period.  After a Cardinals basket, Sophia Karasinski (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central) would join the scoring party by hitting a shot from beyond the arc to make the score 21-13 in favor of WSU early in the second stanza.  SVSU continued to battle, as a pair of Zarycki free throws cut the WSU lead to 23-19 at the media timeout.  The Cardinals eventually brought the score within two, but Karasinski's second long ball of the afternoon helped stretch the Warriors' lead back to five (26-21) with just under four minutes to play before halftime.

Moments later, Alyssa Leister (St. Louis, Mich. / Alma) would hit a triple to make the score 29-23 in favor of WSU.  On the next possession, Karasinski forced a Saginaw Valley State timeout, as she banked in a layup to grow the lead back to eight (31-23).  The Cardinals would close the half on a 7-0 run, capped by a triple with four seconds to play in the half.  WSU led 31-30 after the first 20 minutes of play.

THIRD QUARTER
Neither team could get much going offensively to open the second half, as both clubs went scoreless for the first two minutes of the third period.  Eventually Tori DePerry would give the Cardinals a 33-31 lead on a three pointer at the 7:28 mark of the stanza.  Maxine Moore (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Country Day) would tie the game at 33-33, stopping a WSU scoring drought that spanned more than seven minutes.  Later in the quarter Zarycki would give the Cardinals a 38-35 advantage, thanks to a triple at the 3:46 mark of the quarter.  Tripp would respond by making a pair of free throws to make the score 38-37 in favor of the host Cardinals.

Moments later, DePerry would knock down another triple and force a Wayne State timeout.  That long ball put SVSU in front by six (43-37) with 2:37 to play in the third stanza.  Out of the timeout, Tripp would drill a shot from beyond the arc to bring the Warriors within three (43-40).  However, Saginaw Valley State would respond with a three-pointer of its own to stretch the lead back to six (46-40).  Tripp would add another bucket before the end of the period, but SVSU carried a 49-42 advantage into the fourth quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER
Tripp would open the fourth quarter with a layup to bring the Warriors within five (49-44) and a Mashayla Cecil (Murfreesboro, Tenn. / Paul Laurence Dunbar) triple moments later would make the score 49-47 in favor of the Cardinals.  DePerry and Jessica Massey would make back-to-back baskets for SVSU to help the Cardinals build their lead back to six (53-47).  With just over five minutes to play, McArthur hit another triple to pull the Warriors back within three (55-52).

After the media timeout, SVSU would hit another triple to extend its lead to 58-52.  Following that, Tripp would hit a pair of free throws and a layup to bring the Warriors back within two (58-56) with 2:41 to play in the contest.  After a steal by McArthur, Fugate would knot the game at 58-58 with 1:43 left in the game.  After a Wayne State turnover, SVSU was able to hold for one shot, but Zarycki's jumper was off the mark, and the two squads headed to overtime.

OVERTIME
Bower would open the scoring in extra time, as a layup put the Warriors in front 60-58.  Moments later, DePerry would knot the game at 60-60 with 3:36 to play in overtime.  On the other end of the court, Bower connected on another layup to push the Green and Gold ahead by two (62-60) once again.  After a SVSU foul, Bower would split a pair of free throws, giving WSU a one-point advantage (63-62) with 2:55 to play.

The Warriors and Cardinals would trade buckets, as Zarycki and Moore both hit jumpers to make the score 65-64 in favor of the Warriors with just over two minutes to play.  From there, the Cardinals would score four straight points to force a timeout.  The Cardinals led 68-65 with 1:03 left in the period.  Out of the timeout, Bower cashed in a three-point play to tie the game at 68-68 with 51 seconds left in the game.  After a Saginaw Valley State made shot, the Warriors couldn't respond on the other end and were forced to foul to extend the game.  The Cardinals would make enough shots down the stretch to collect a 72-68 victory.

Tripp led the team in scoring, tallying 15 points, while adding seven rebounds and three assists.  Bower and McArthur each reach double-figure scoring marks, as Bower dropped 14 points and McArthur poured in 11 points.
