Women's Basketball Improves To 8-3 With Win Over Michigan-Dearborn

Fugate, Tripp and Moore combine for 38 points.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad improved to 8-3 overall with a 75-44 triumph over visiting Michigan-Dearborn (4-13 overall) Friday evening at the Wayne State Fieldhouse.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The Warriors led nearly the entire game, other than for 32 seconds in the first 65 seconds of the game.  A lay-up by senior Maxine Moore (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Country Day) on the game's opening possession preceded a pair of free throws by UMD's Abby Fullerton.  A triple by senior Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) gave WSU the lead for good.  Wayne State led 15-10 after the opening period with Fugate scoring eight points in the stanza.

Second Quarter
After the Wolverines reduced their deficit to two (15-13) on a triple by Siena Smith, the Warriors went on a 10-0 run ignited by back-to-back three pointers by sophomore Alyssa Leister (St. Louis, Mich. / Alma) and Fugate, followed by consecutive buckets from sophomore Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center).  Fullerton connected from long range to end the spurt.  Wayne State led 30-17 at the mid-point of the quarter after another shot from beyond the arc by Fugate, which started a 13-2 run by the Warriors to conclude the first half.  WSU had a 40-19 advantage at intermission.  Fugate and Tripp each tallied six points in the period with Fugate making both triple tries, and Tripp making three field goals.

Third Quarter
Wayne State maintained a 17 to 23 point advantage for most of the stanza until a late bucket by Moore pushed the margin to 24 (53-29) with 2:18 left.  Fugate later split a pair from the charity stripe and senior Kate McArthur (Warren, Mich. / Cousino) hit a step back triple just before the quarter ended giving the hosts a 57-29 lead after 30 minutes.  Moore led WSU with six points in the period.

Fourth Quarter
A conventional three-point play by Leister started the scoring in the final period and WSU's lead was never fewer than 28 points the rest of the game.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 45 percent (29-of-65) from the field, while UMD shot 26 percent (16-of-62) from the floor.  WSU was 10-of-26 (39 percent) from three-point range, while limiting the Wolverines to 6-of-26 (23 percent).  The Warriors made 7-of-9 (78 percent) from the charity stripe, with Michigan-Dearborn shooting just 46 percent (6-of-13) from the foul line.  Wayne State had a 46-39 edge in rebounding, along with a 36-16 advantage in points in the paint.
