DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (8-4 overall, 1-3 GLIAC) dropped a 56-52 overtime decision to visiting Northern Michigan University (9-5 overall, 4-1 GLIAC) Thursday evening at the Wayne State Fieldhouse.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The contest began with a game of runs as the Warriors scored the first six points, before the Wildcats responded with the next 13 points.  Each team scored four points over the final three minutes of the opening stanza with NMU leading 17-10 after 10 minutes.  Senior guard Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) led WSU with five points and five defensive rebounds in the period.

Second Quarter
Northern Michigan took a 26-14 lead just past the mid-point of the quarter on a lay-up by Sarah Newcomer.  Wayne State out-scored the visitors 14-2 over the final 3:50 before intermission to knot the game at 28-28.  Five different players scored during the run to end the first half.  Senior center Maxine Moore (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Country Day) scored four points and grabbed four rebounds in the period.

Third Quarter
The Wildcats scored 13 of the first 19 points after halftime for a 41-34 lead.  NMU led 43-36 after a lay-up by Mackenzie Holzwart with 62 seconds left in the stanza, but the Warriors answered with five consecutive points to cut their deficit to two (43-41) heading into the fourth quarter.  Fugate led all scorers with nine points in the period.

Fourth Quarter
The teams combined for just 10 points in the fourth period as WSU shot 3-of-10 from the floor and Northern Michigan made just 2-of-16 field goal attempts (13 percent).  The game was tied three times (43-43, 45-45, 47-47), the last coming on a jumper by NMU's Makaylee Kuhn with 2:57 left in regulation.  Neither team scored after that and the game went to overtime.

Overtime
NMU led 50-47 after Ana Rhude split a pair from the charity stripe at the 4:00 mark, then added a lay-up 37 seconds later.  A lay-up from sophomore Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) pulled the Warriors within one (50-49) with 2:41 left.  A lay-up by Kuhn preceded Fugate splitting a pair of foul shots.  Wildcat Kayla Tierney scored her only points of the game with a triple on the ensuing possession extending the Northern Michigan lead to five (55-50) with 1:41 remaining.  A lay-up by Fugate cut the deficit to three but that would be the last points for Wayne State.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 39 percent from the floor (21-of-54), while NMU was 24-of-78 (31 percent).  WSU was just 1-of-8 (13 percent) from three-point range, with the Wildcats connecting on 5-of-22 (23 percent) triple tries.  The Warriors made 9-of1-14 (64 percent) from the foul line, while Northern Michigan was just 3-of-10 (30 percent) at the charity stripe.  NMU had a 53-38 edge in rebounding, including 22 offensive rebounds, while led to a 12-0 advantage in second-chance points.
