Men's Hoops Notches Home Court Victory, 74-55, Over The Pride

Five Warriors reach double figures.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team evened both its overall record (4-4) at GLIAC mark (1-1) with a 74-55 triumph Friday evening over visiting Purdue Northwest (6-4 overall, 1-2 GLIAC) at the Wayne State Fieldhouse.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
Redshirt senior Antonio Marshall (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) drained a triple on the game's opening possession and WSU led for the next four minutes until the Pride's Jaylon Gentry converted an old fashioned three-point play to knot the game at 8-8.  Thirty seconds later Marshall connected from long range giving the Warriors an 11-8 advantage.  The score remained in Wayne State's favor for the next five minutes until Mikell Cooper made a three-pointer to tie the game at 15-15 just past the mid-point of the first half.

After a WSU turnover, Cooper made two free throws giving Purdue Northwest its first lead of the game at 17-15.  Cooper connected from beyond the arc to complete an 8-0 by PNW.  The Warriors responded with seven consecutive points, including five by freshman Carmelo Harris (Flint, Mich. / Beecher) before the Pride's Kai Steinman split a pair from the charity stripe with 5:54 remaining before intermission.

The teams traded buckets over the next four minutes with neither squad leading by more than three points.  After PNW pulled within one (29-28) on a lay-up by Alou Dillon, Wayne State tallied eight of the next 10 points for a 37-30 advantage and the largest lead of the game to that point.  A late basket by Dillon cut the WSU margin to five (37-32) at halftime.

Second Half
The Warriors scored the first five points after intermission on a jumper by junior Ray Williams, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) and triple by Harris.  WSU's advantage remained between seven and 10 points, until a 5-0 run increased the margin to 13 (52-39) with 10:58 left.

After the Pride pulled within 10 (52-42) on a conventional three-point play by Steinman, Wayne State went on a 13-3 spurt to push the advantage to 20 (65-45) with 7:35 left on a driving lay-up by graduate student Cortez Jackson (Harper Woods, Mich. / St. Clair Shores Lake Shore).

The margin was never fewer than 18 the rest of the way.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 43 percent (26-of-61) from the floor, compared to PNW's 36 percent (20-of-55).  WSU made 8-of-25 triple tries (32 percent), while the Pride connected on 3-of-20 (15 percent) shots from beyond the arc.  The Warriors were 14-of-21 (67 percent) from the charity stripe, with Purdue Northwest shooting 55 percent (12-of-22) from the foul line.  Wayne State had a 43-35 edge in rebounding, and turned 14 Pride turnovers into an 18-3 advantage in points off turnovers.
