Women's Basketball Drops Home Contest Against Parkside

Sam Cherney posts a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (14-6 overall, 10-5 GLIAC) was upended by Parkside (13-11 overall, 10-6 GLIAC), 64-55, Saturday afternoon inside the Wayne State Fieldhouse.

FIRST QUARTER
Neither team could gain much of an edge in the opening minutes of the game, with the contest sitting at 6-5 in favor of Parkside just under three minutes in.  Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) and Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville) provided baskets in the opening minutes.  Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) would eventually put the Warriors in front, 11-10, with a jumper at the 3:38 mark of the stanza.  Down the stretch of the frame, the Warriors would hold on to that one-point advantage, leading 17-6 after the first 10 minutes of action.

SECOND QUARTER
The Green and Gold opened the second frame with a bucket by Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington), but the Warriors struggled to find the mark the rest of the period.  After that bucket, the Rangers would go on a 19-7 run to close the half, taking a 35-26 lead into the break.  Fugate had four of the seven points in that run, including a jumper in the closing seconds of the half to keep Parkside's lead under double digits.

THIRD QUARTER
The Warriors didn't gain any ground in the third quarter either, falling behind 47-36 after three periods.  The Rangers had five different players get baskets in the quarter.  Not much was falling for WSU in the frame, as the Warriors would only post 10 points in the stanza. Cherney had six, while Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) and Sherwood each had two-point baskets.

FOURTH QUARTER
The offenses opened up in the final period, but it was too little, too late for the Warriors, as they would eventually fall, 64-55.  Anna Ruhstorfer (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Flint Powers Catholic) provided a spark in the final stanza, scoring six of the Green and Gold's 19 points in the period.  Kate McArthur (Warren, Mich. / Cousino) also had a strong final quarter, hitting a three and notching another bucket to finish with five points.  To close the game, Maxine Moore (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Country Day) hit a layup with under 10 seconds to play.

TEAM STATS
The Warriors actually held the shooting advantage, making 36 percent (25-of-69) of their shots from the field and 18 percent (3-of-17) of their looks from deep.  Parkside hit 35 percent (22-of-63) of its shots and 17 percent (5-of-29) of its looks from beyond the arc.  On the glass, WSU had a 49-40 advantage.  However, the Warriors turned the ball over 21 times compared to just 14 giveaways for the Rangers.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Cherney posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.  She also had three blocked shots.  Fugate provided eight points and seven rebounds, while Sherwood and Miller each chipped in seven points.

LEADING THE RANGERS
Hannah Plockelman led the way in points and rebounds, notching 26 points and 13 boards.  Alyssa Nelson aided the attack with 17 points and six rebounds.
