Late Rally Not Enough for Men's Hoops

The Warriors tied the game with six minutes to play.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (5-17, 4-15 GLIAC) lost to Grand Valley State (17-9, 11-8 GLIAC) 62-53 on Thursday night inside the Wayne State Fieldhouse.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Warriors found themselves down double digits, 11-1, at the 14:11 mark of the opening half.  Cortez Jackson (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) trimmed the deficit to eight, 19-11, with a three-pointer and a Ray Williams, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) jumper made it 19-13.  David Hughes (Southfield, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) brought the Warriors within six, 24-18, with just under five minutes left before halftime.  GVSU ended the first half on an 8-2 run to give the Lakers a 32-20 advantage as the teams entered the locker rooms.

Four minutes in to the second stanza, the visiting Lakers led 38-23.  However, the Green & Gold used an 11-0 run to cut the GVSU advantage to three, 39-36, at the 10:54 mark.  Five consecutive points from Hughes kept WSU close, 44-43, with 7:19 remaining.  A free throw from Brailen Neely (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) tied the game at 44-44 at the 6:02 mark and Wayne State could not capitalize on opportunities to take its first lead of the contest.  A fast break layup from Isaac Gassman pushed GVSU's lead back to seven, 51-44, with 3:46 left to play.  GVSU would control the final minutes of play and win 62-53.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Neely had a team-best 17 points, while Williams totaled 13 points.  Hughes finished with 11 points and seven rebounds, while Avery Lewis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron)  collected 10 rebounds.

LEADING THE LAKERS
Jake Van Tubbergen returned to the Laker lineup in style with 17 points and 17 rebounds.  Gassman tallied 13 points.

ONE BIG THING
It was an even contest when looking at the box score but GVSU got 20 points off its bench compared to nine for Wayne State.

TEAM STATS
Free throws have haunted the Warriors all season long and Thursday night was no different.  The Warriors went 25-of-25 from the line (60 percent) compared to GVSU's 79 percent clip (19-of-24).

UP NEXT
Wayne State will finish the season against Davenport on Saturday afternoon.  It will be Hall of Fame Day as well as Senior Day.  WSU will honor Neely and LJ DeWolf prior to tip-off.
