Men's Basketball Falls at Northwood

MIDLAND, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's basketball program (3-14 overall, 2-12 GLIAC) lost 80-77 at Northwood (4-14 overall, 2-9 GLIAC) on Monday night.  Brailen Neely (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) became the 21st member of the 1,000-point club late in the first half.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Wayne State jumped out to 10-4 lead at the 16:19 mark following a dunk by Ray Williams, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy).  NU used a three-point play from Desean Munson to pull within one, 12-11.  WSU responded with its own three-point play from Neely to give the Warriors a 17-11 lead and Neely stayed hot with a triple on the next trip down the court.  A long-ranger jumper from Kylin Grant (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) extended WSU's lead to 23-15 at the 9:25 mark.  Northwood took advantage of a Wayne State scoring drought and trimmed the WSU lead to two, 27-25, before Neely collected his milestone-setting basket at the 3:30 mark.  Antonio Marshall (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) made a pair of free throws to give WSU a 31-28 lead with 2:30 to play before halftime.  The Timberwolves' Christian Smith connected from deep just before the first-half buzzer to put the halftime score at 36-31 in favor of the Green & Gold.

Northwood scored the first five points of the second half to tie the game at 36-36 at the 18:31 mark.  Jack Ammerman gave NU a 53-47 lead with 11:54 to play with a three-pointer.  Northwood led 60-53 at the 9:24 mark, but WSU would make it a two-point game with a slam.  A Marshall three-pointer cut the home advantage to 62-61 with 7:35 remaining.  A triple from Neely tied the game at 66-66 with 5:52 left in regulation.  The game remained tied at 68-68 after a layup from Williams at the 5:05 mark.  David Hughes (Southfield, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) put the Warriors on top 70-68, but NU tied the game at 70-70 on its next possession.  Two points at the charity stripe from Darian Owens-White (Detroit, Mich. / River Rouge) deadlocked the game again at 72-72 with 2:26 to play.  NU went on a 7-2 run to lead 79-74 with 20 seconds to play.  The T-Wolves would hold on for an 80-77 victory.
