DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Beginning a gauntlet of three straight matches against top-five opponents, the No. 21 Wayne State University men's tennis team (11-3 overall) was impressive in a triumph over No. 5 Embry-Riddle (9-3 overall) on Monday afternoon.  The Warriors battled to a 4-3 road victory.

After doubles, Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) was the first player to record a win, earning a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 5 singles.

In a highly-rated match between WSU's No. 63-ranked Dom Spicer (London, England) and Embry-Riddle's No. 2-ranked Juan Ortiz Couder, Spicer was able to get the best of the Eagles' star player.  He posted a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles to push the Warriors in front 3-0 in the contest.

Embry-Riddle closed the gap to 3-1, as Luke Laws was defeated 6-7 (5), 0-6 at No. 6 singles.

However, Ben Lakeman (Penzance Cornwall, England) extended the Green and Gold's advantage to 4-1 and solidified a win in the match by upending his opponent 6-2, 7-5 at No. 4 singles.

Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia) fell in his match at No. 2 singles, 4-6, 3-6.  His opponent entered the contest ranked No. 17 in the nation.

Playing at No. 3 singles, Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) was defeated 4-6, 6-2, 6-7 (5).

FROM COACH MORROW
"Pulled out an enormous win against Embry-Riddle.  They're No. 5 in the country.  Started with great energy in doubles.  Brought it to them.  We won all three doubles courts," coach Bryan Morrow said.  "Dom Spicer at No. 1 singles beat the No. 2 ranked player in the country in straight sets.  Played the best match I've ever seen him play."

UP NEXT
The schedule doesn't ease up for the Green and Gold, as the Warriors will compete at No. 3 Saint Leo tomorrow morning.  The match is set to begin at 11 AM.
