Baseball Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader

WSU scored a total of 39 runs in the two games.

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Wayne State University baseball program (5-2) won 13-2 over UIndy (4-5).  The Warriors scored 10 runs in the seventh inning of game one to win 13-2 on Saturday.  WSU won Saturday's suspended game two, 26-11, which concluded on Sunday morning.

GAME ONE (W, 13-2)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) singled to start the top of the second inning before Davis Graham (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South) was hit by a pitch.  An RBI single from Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) gave WSU a 1-0 lead.  Karter Fitzpatrick (Monroe, Mich. / Carleton Airport) (2-0) worked around a hit by pitch, a double and a walk to keep UIndy off the board in the bottom of the second inning.  The Greyhounds tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo home run.

A single from Miller started the fifth inning and Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) kept the inning alive with a two-out base hit.  Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) gave the Green & Gold a 2-1 advantage with an RBI single up the middle.  A wild pitch allowed another run to score and push the visitor's lead to 3-1.  A lead off walk and a base hit netted Indianapolis a run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Warriors started to find their footing in the seventh inning and loaded the bases after a single from Finkbeiner, a Tanderys double and a Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) hit-by-pitch.  DeLanoy and Graham connected for back-to-back RBI singles, giving WSU a 5-2 lead.  The lead grew to 8-2 after a balk and a two-run single from Brett Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.).  Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich.) plated the sixth run of the inning with an RBI single into right field and then a three-run home run by Finkbeiner made it 12-2.  MacLean followed with a solo blast to venter field for the 10th run of the inning.

Kaden Stively (Washington, Mich. / Romeo) collected the final three outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure the 13-2 victory and earn his first career save.

AT THE PLATE
Five Warriors turned in multi-hit performances led by Finkbeiner who went 3-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored.  Tanderys, MacLean, DeLanoy and Miller all had two hits.

ON THE MOUND
Fitzpatrick allowed two runs in five innings and struck out three batters on his way to improving to 2-0.  Stively worked two scoreless frames, allowing just one hit and struck out one batter.

GAME TWO (W, 26-11)
HOW IT HAPPENED

MacLean jump started the lineup with a two-run double in the top of the first inning.  DeLanoy sent a two-run home run over the wall in right field and Ryne Travis (Lockport, Ill. / Lockport Twp.) drove in the inning's fifth run with a double into center field.  UIndy got on the board with a run in the bottom of the first.

The Warriors scored six more runs in the top of the second inning, all coming on home runs.  Tanderys blasted a two-run home run to center field, Graham had a three-run big fly and Logan Tobel (Brighton, Mich. / Hartland) hit his first career home run to give WSU an 11-1 advantage.  The Greyhounds answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning.  Another home run, this one of the two-run variety, trimmed UIndy's deficit to 12-4.

The ball continued to fly, and a fourth inning three-run home run for the Hounds made it 12-7.  Finkbeiner doubled to left field to start the top of the fifth inning and Tanderys followed with an RBI double to give the Green & Gold a 13-7 lead.  The momentum stayed with WSU in the fifth inning as Graham singled in a run before Tobel made it 15-7 with a sacrifice fly to center field.

WSU added a run in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI groundout by Finkbeiner.  In the same inning Tanderys hit his second home run of the game, a two-run shot to center field. making it 18-7.  Two hits and a WSU error allowed a run to score in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Miller drove in the 19th run of the game in the top of the seventh inning and Foley made it 21-8 with a two-run double.  A wild pitch allowed another tally for WSU on the scoreboard.  Jacoby Dale (Roseville, Mich.) drove in two runs with a single into right field as play resumed on Sunday morning.

Indianapolis scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to put the score at 24-10.

In the top of the ninth inning, a double from Kyle Domzalski (Huntington Woods, Mich. / Berkley) and a walk to Tobel loaded the bases for Kyle Ray (Woodhaven, Mich.) who reached on an error as two more runs scored.  UIndy added a run in the bottom of the ninth inning on two hits and a walk.

OFFENSIVE OUTPUT
WSU matches the program record for runs in a game.  The Warriors had previously tallied 26 runs against Davenport on April 26, 2019. The five home runs is tied for the second most all-time behind a six home run performance at Urbana on April 9, 2013.

AT THE PLATE
WSU has 19 hits (five home runs and seven doubles) and six walks plus two UIndy error to score 22 runs.  Tanderys was 3-for-5 with five RBI, including a pair of home runs.  Graham drove in four runs, going 2-for-3, while Foley, Finkbeiner and Miller all had two hits.

ON THE MOUND
Seth Marano (Canton, Mich.) allowed four runs in two and a 1/3 innings and struck out three batters.  Jimmy Love (Birmingham, Mich. / Seaholm) (1-0) worked three and 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks with three Ks.

Joey Muzljakovich (Mayfield, Mich. / Traverse City St. Francis) worked a scoreless inning on Saturday before play was halted.  Griffin Kilander (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) was on the mound when the game picked back up.  He allowed three runs on five hits and a walk in two innings.

WSU will finish the series with the Greyhounds on Sunday.
