Softball Drops Pair To Visiting Saginaw Valley

Warriors fall 4-3 and 12-1.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (12-16 overall, 5-5 GLIAC) dropped both ends of Tuesday's home doubleheader to visiting Saginaw Valley State University (22-12 overall, 8-4 GLIAC).  SVSU won the opener 4-3, and then posted a 12-1 triumph in the nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP
The visiting Cardinals scored once in each of the first three innings, then extended their lead to 4-0 in the top of the fifth.

Julia Salisbury had an RBI single in the first, Jackie Popko walked with the bases loaded in the second, and Meagan VerVaecke scored on a wild pitch in the third.  Saginaw Valley's run in the fifth was unearned as VerVaecke had a leadoff double, went to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a Warrior fielding error.

WSU scored twice in the bottom of the fifth as senior second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) had a one-out single and sophomore shortstop Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) followed with a single to left.  Freshman outfielder Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada) walked to load the bases, and junior Breanna Paolatto (Belle River, Ont.) delivered a two-run single into left center.  The next two Warrior hitters were retired to keep the deficit at two.

In the bottom of the seventh, Psenicka reached base for the fourth consecutive time with her third single of the game.  After back-to-back pop outs, Paolatto doubled down the third base line scoring Psenicka.  A ground out ended the contest.

IN THE CIRCLE
Senior Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits in seven innings.  She struck out three and walked four.

Emily Depew (8-7) surrendered three earned runs on eight hits.  She struck out eight and walked two.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Psenicka went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk.  Paolatto had two hits and drove in all three runs.

LEADING THE CARDINALS
Sarah Gersch, Salisbury and VerVaecke each had two hits with Gersch and VerVaecke each scoring twice.

GAME TWO RECAP
Saginaw Valley scored four times in the first, added two runs in the second, single runs in the third and fourth, and four additional runs in the fifth.

Wayne State's lone run came in the bottom of the fourth as Ruczynski had a leadoff single, went to second on a wild pitch, and scored on an RBI single through the right side by senior infielder Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester).

IN THE CIRCLE
Sophomore Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) allowed eight earned runs on 11 hits in three innings.  She struck out two and walked four.  Graduate Student Emily Karas (Macomb Twp., Mich. / Utica Henry Ford II) pitched the final two innings allowing four earned runs on six hits with one strikeout.

Julia Mundy (7-2) limited WSU to one run on three hits in five innings.  She struck out six and did not walk a batter.
