Softball Loses Two One-Run Affairs

WSU falls 5-4 and 3-2 at Northwood.

MIDLAND, Mich. -- The Wayne State University softball team (12-18 overall, 5-7 GLIAC) lost twice at Northwood University (18-8 overall, 4-4 GLIAC) on Thursday afternoon.  The host Timberwolves rallied three different times to win the opener 5-4, then scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to win the nightcap 3-2.

GAME ONE RECAP
WSU took its first lead, 1-0, in the top of the first as sophomore shortstop Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) had a one-out single, went to second on a passed ball, moved to third on ground out and scored on a single by junior Breanna Paolatto (Belle River, Ont.).

NU tied the game in the bottom of the first on a leadoff single and a two-out double by Delanie Grundman.

The Warriors went ahead 3-1 in the second as freshman Leah Wrubel (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Mattawan) had a leadoff single, was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior catcher Avieri Ludwig (Chesterfield, Mich. / Anchor Bay).  A double by junior outfielder Gabby Kaple (Galion, Ohio) plated Wrubel.  After a single by sophomore outfielder Abby Favela (Riverside, Ill. / Riverside-Brookfield), senior second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) hit a sacrifice fly scoring Kaple.

Northwood evened the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the third on a two-out, two-run home run by Haley Frank.

Wayne State answered back in the fourth as Kaple had a one-out single and advanced to second on a single by Favela.  A walk to Psenicka loaded the bases, while Miller's ground out plated Kaple.

The Timberwolves scored twice in the fourth to complete the scoring.  Brittany Steimel tied the game with a one-out home run, and an RBI double by Gianna Fantin proved to be the difference.

IN THE CIRCLE
Senior Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) went the distance for WSU allowing five earned runs on six hits in six innings.  Four of the six hits by NU went for extra bases with two doubles and two home runs.  Ameel struck out five and walked two.

Shayna Frank started for Northwood and pitched the first 3.1 innings allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits.  She struck out two and did not walk a batter.  Emily Cox earned the win in relief blanking WSU over the final 3.2 innings.  Cox struck out two and walked one.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Kaple went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Wrubel had two hits.

LEADING THE TIMBERWOLVES
Alexis Koehler had two hits and two runs scored.

GAME TWO RECAP
The second half of the twinbill was scoreless until the top of the fifth as Favela had a leadoff single.  Psenicka then laced a single into right field that was misplayed allowing Favela to score all the way from first.  Miller hit a sacrifice fly to right scoring Psenicka with the game's second run.

In the bottom of the sixth, Northwood scored three times on five hits, after recording just four hits in the first five innings.  Three straight singles with one out plated one run, then pinch-hitter Krista Moe hit a single to center to knot the game at 2-2.  Following a wild pitch and infield single, Madelin Skene hit a sacrifice fly to give the hosts a 3-2 lead.

Psenicka had a one-out double in the seventh, but back-to-back ground outs ended the contest.

IN THE CIRCLE
Graduate student Emily Karas (Macomb Twp., Mich. / Utica Henry Ford II) tossed a complete game.  She allowed three earned runs on nine hits in six innings.  Karas struck out three and walked one.

Hailey Leister started for the Timberwolves and allowed two unearned runs on six hits in five innings.  Cox notched her second victory of the day by hurling two scoreless frames allowing just one hit with three strikeouts.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Psenicka went 3-for-3 and has now reached base in 28 of WSU's 30 games.

LEADING THE TIMBERWOLVES
Grundman and Jillian Krawczak each had two hits.
