Softball Splits Twinbill With Parkside

WSU wins nightcap 4-1 after falling 1-0 in the opener.

DETROIT -- On a blustery and rainy Friday afternoon, the Wayne State University softball squad (13-19 overall, 6-8 GLIAC) split a home doubleheader against the University of Wisconsin Parkside (6-28 overall, 2-10 GLIAC).  The visiting Rangers won the opener 1-0 with a run in the top of the seventh, while the Warriors scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to snap a 1-1 deadlock in a 4-1 triumph in the nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP
Parkside had just two runners reach second base through the first six innings, but had two doubles in the seventh sandwiched around a foul out to score the game's lone run.

Dani Evans had a leadoff double to left center, and Rylee Baetz drove in Evans with a double to left.

WSU had back-to-back one-out singles in the third by Avieri Ludwig (Chesterfield, Mich. / Anchor Bay) and Abby Favela (Riverside, Ill. / Riverside-Brookfield), but consecutive fielder's choices ended the frame.

IN THE CIRCLE
Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) was the tough-luck loser allowing just one earned run on five hits in seven innings.  She struck out seven and walked one.

Kiley Akey went the distance for UWP tossing a five-hit shutout.  She struck out one and did not walk a batter.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Five different WSU batters had singles.

LEADING THE RANGERS
Jadynn Powell went 2-for-2 with a walk, while Baetz had the game-winning RBI.

GAME TWO RECAP
The second contest looked very similar to game one with neither scoring for the first four innings.

In the bottom of the fifth, Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont.) worked an eight pitch walk with one out.  She advanced to second on a ground out and had to hold at third on an infield single by Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) as UWP shortstop Taylor Delgado made a diving stop to keep the ball in the infield.  Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) laced an 0-1 offering into right field scoring Hodder with the game's first run.

Parkside tied the contest in the top of the sixth on a leadoff walk to Powell, but Evans stole second after reaching on a fielder's choice, and scored on a single up the middle by Baetz, who moved to third via a Warrior miscue.  After a hit by pitch, WSU hurler Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) struck out Akey on a 2-2 pitch to end the threat.

Bonk reached on an error to start the sixth and advanced to second as Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) walked on four pitches.  On the very next offering from Ranger reliever Olivia Masnica, Emily Guzzo (London, Ont.) smacked a three-run shot down the left field line for her first career home run.

UWP made it interesting in the seventh as Delgado had a one-out walk, but a ground out and a strikeout ended the contest.

IN THE CIRCLE
Bonk evened her record at 6-6 by allowing one earned run on five hits.  She struck out six and walked three.  Bonk had to do a couple of Houdini impersonations to keep the game scoreless.  Delgado had a one-out triple in the third, but didn't score and Alyssa Laxson had a leadoff double in the fourth and pinch-runner Eden Welling moved to third on a wild pitch but was out at the plate on a fielder's choice.

Tijanne Ross allowed one earned run on five hits in five innings with zero strikeouts and one walk.  Masnica (0-5) surrendered three runs (two earned) on two hits in her lone inning of work.  She recorded one strikeout and allowed one walk.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Miller had two hits, while Guzzo drove in three runs.

LEADING THE RANGERS
Delgado and CaroleAnn Goglin each had a hit and reached base via a walk.
