Women's Tennis Downs Grand Valley State 5-2

WSU won seven of the nine matches between singles and doubles.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team (11-6 overall, 6-0 GLIAC) stayed in the hunt for a GLIAC Championship with a 5-2 victory over Grand Valley State (10-5 overall, 5-1 GLIAC) Friday evening. 

SINGLES
After the Warriors earned the doubles point, Laura Cazacu (London, England) kicked things off with a win at No. 3 singles.  She defeated her opponent 6-3, 6-0. 

Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) kept things going with a 6-1, 6-2 win in the top spot. 

Linda Liong (Sarawak, Malaysia) clinched the match with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 victory at No. 4 singles. 

Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland) also posted a win at No. 2 singles.  She won, 7-6 (5), 6-2. 

Brianna Douglas (Dayton, Ohio / Chaminade Julienne) dropped a three-set battle at No. 5 singles, 5-7, 6-2, 4-10. 

The final singles match ended in a 5-7, 6-4, 6-10 loss, as Sabrina Laynes (Saginaw, Mich. / Heritage) fell just short at No. 6 singles. 

DOUBLES
The Warriors were dominant in doubles, taking care of business in all three matches.  Ruyssen and Komar earned a 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles. 

Following them were Cazacu and Liong, who recorded a 6-2 victory in the No. 2 spot. 

To cap off doubles, Laynes and Douglas were strong at the bottom of the lineup, posting a 6-2 win.

"At the start of the day, the girls came out with a lot of energy and played with purpose.  You could see in their eyes that they were on a mission for the day.  They played with a lot of heart and passion.  Hopefully we can maintain this level of play, because there is still a lot of tennis left in the season," coach Sheila Snyder said. 

UP NEXT
The schedule doesn't ease up, as the Green and Gold will square off with No. 64-Ferris State tomorrow afternoon.  The match is set to begin at 2 PM.
