Softball Upended Twice At Saginaw Valley

Warriors fall 6-0 and 6-2 to the Cardinals.

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Wayne State University softball squad (13-23 overall, 6-12 GLIAC) lost both ends of a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Saginaw Valley State University (28-12 overall, 14-4 GLIAC).  SVSU won the opener 6-0 and claimed a 6-2 triumph in the nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Warriors were limited to two singles, both by sophomore shortstop Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.).  The only other WSU base runners were sophomore outfielder Abby Favela (Riverside, Ill. / Riverside-Brookfield), who reached on a fielding error, and freshman outfielder Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada), who walked.

SVSU scored twice in the bottom of the second on a walk, a double by Sarah Moos, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Blasia Moyler.

The Cardinals added four runs in the sixth, which included RBI singles by Leah Denome and Meagan VerVaecke, along with RBI doubles by Jackie Popko and Moyler.

IN THE CIRCLE
Senior Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) suffered the setback after allowing six earned runs on six hits in six innings.  She struck out two and walked one.  It was the fifth time this year the Warriors had been shutout with Ameel in the circle.

Emily Depew improved to 10-7 after facing just 23 batters.  She struck out nine and walked one while allowing two singles.

Six different SVSU batters had one hit apiece with Moyler driving in two.

GAME TWO RECAP
Saginaw Valley scored four times in the bottom of the first and led 6-0 before WSU scored twice in the top of the sixth.

Popko hit a three-run home run in the first, while VerVaecke added a solo shot.

SVSU scored on a wild pitch in the fourth, and an RBI single by Moos in the fifth.

Senior second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) walked with two outs in the sixth, while Miller and Ruczynski followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases.  Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) laced a two-run single to left.

IN THE CIRCLE
Bonk pitched the first 4.1 innings and allowed six earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts to one walk.  Emily Karas (Macomb Twp., Mich. / Utica Henry Ford II) tossed the final 1.2 innings allowing two hits and one walk wtih two strikeouts.

Julia Mundy (10-2) worked the first six innings allowing two earned runs on three hits.  She struck out three and walked one.  Alyssa Muench worked a 1-2-3 seventh.

Each of the top four batters in the lineup reached base once.

Wayne State will continue its road trip with conference doubleheaders at Grand Valley State on Saturday and Davenport on Sunday.
