Baseball Cruises Past Purdue Northwest in Series Opener

The Warriors scored 23 runs on 16 hits and drew 11 walks.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball program (28-13, 13-6 GLIAC) hosted Purdue Northwest (17-15, 6-11 GLIAC) for the first of four games on Friday and the Warriors won comfortably 23-4 as every starter collected an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
A Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) double gave the Warriors a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the second inning.  The Green & Gold broke the game open in the bottom of the third inning with 10 runs on four hits and four walks.  Bases loaded walks to Jacoby Dale (Roseville, Mich.) and Brett Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) started the scoring.  A sacrifice fly by Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) and a CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont.) RBI single made it 6-0.  Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich.) cleared the bases with a double into right center to give WSU a 9-0 lead before Dale was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Zimmerman drove in the 11th run with a single into left field.

The Pride pushed across a run on three hits and a walk in the top of the fourth inning.

Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) tripled home a run in the bottom of the fourth inning and Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) made it 13-1 with an RBI double down the left field line.

Wayne State added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Ramirez drove in a run with a single before Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) made it a 16-1 game with a two-run double down the left field line.  Dale collected another RBI with a groundout to finish the scoring in the frame.

PNW used two hits, three walks and an error in the top of the seventh inning to score three runs.

Tanderys drove in Miller and DeLanoy in the bottom of the seventh with a double into left center field, giving the Warriors a 19-4 lead.

WSU scored its final four runs of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning.  A single from DeLanoy drove in a run an long three-run home run over the "Green Monster" from Davis Graham (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South) made it 23-4.

AT THE PLATE
Tanderys had the hottest bat in a lineup that was clicking on all cylinders, going 4-for5 with three RBI and two walks.  DeLanoy posted a 2-for-4 game with two RBI, while Ramirez drove in four runs with a pair of hits.  Also turning in multiple-RBI performances were Graham (3), Dale (2), Finkbeiner (2), Zimmerman (2) and Miller (2).

ON THE MOUND
Karter Fitzpatrick (Monroe, Mich. / Carleton Airport) (6-1) was effective in six innings, striking out six batters and allowing one run on five hits and two walks.

Jimmy Love (Birmingham, Mich. / Seaholm) was unable to record an out after walking the three batters he faced.  All three runners would come around to score.  Ryan Szlachcic (Jenison, Mich. / Hudsonville) did not allow a run in his inning of relief.

Griffin Kilander (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) struck out two batters in during his spotless eighth inning and Jacob Raymond (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) finished the game with a zero in the ninth inning.

UP NEXT
The teams will meet for a doubleheader on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.  In between games the department will recognize baseball alumni, including the 1980, 1981 and 1982 teams that won three straight GLIAC titles.
