Softball Swept at Ferris State

Warriors fall 3-2 and 12-0.

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Wayne State University softball team (13-29 overall, 6-18 GLIAC) began the final weekend of the regular season with a conference doubleheader at Ferris State University (16-30 overall, 7-16 GLIAC).  WSU let a 2-0 lead slip away as FSU scored three times in the bottom of the fifth to win the opener 3-2.  The Bulldogs scored three times in the first and nine times in the second inning to win the nightcap 12-0 in five innings.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third as sophomore outfielder Abby Favela (Riverside, Ill. / Riverside-Brookfield) worked a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Senior second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.), after fouling off back-to-back 2-2 pitches, laced an RBI single into right center plating Favela.

FSU had back-to-back singles to start the bottom of the third, but a pop out, a strikeout and a line out to Psenicka ended the frame.

In the top of the fourth, sophomore designated player Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) and junior first baseman Breanna Paolatto (Belle River, Ont.) earned back-to-back walks to start the inning prompting a Bulldog pitching change.  After a pop out, freshman infielder Leah Wrubel (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Mattawan) singled to right field to load the bases.  Following a force out at home plate, Favela singled to right scoring Paolatto.

Ferris State tallied three runs in the bottom of the fifth.  Kacey Bouche had a leadoff double and went to third on a ground out.  A sacrifice fly by FSU's Paige Kortz tied the game at 1-1.  Three straight singles by the Bulldogs produced two runs, both coming on a hit by Josie Prince.

Wayne State falls to 4-10 in one-run games, and 1-21 when scoring two runs of less.

IN THE CIRCLE
Senior Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) suffered the setback to fall to 5-14.  She allowed three earned runs on eight hits in six innings.  Ameel struck out four and walked one.

Kristina Baar started for the Bulldogs and pitched the first three-plus innings.  She allowed two earned runs on two hits.  Baar struck out three and walked four.

Kristie Gray relieved Baar in the fourth and blanked Wayne State on three hits over the final four innings to earn the victory (4-7).  She recorded one strikeout and one walk.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Five different WSU batters had singles, with both Favela and Psenicka reaching base twice and driving in a run.

LEADING THE BULLDOGS
Kylie Winkels had two hits, while Kaitlyn Orme reached twice via a single and a walk.

GAME TWO RECAP
Ferris State scored three runs in the bottom of the first on three walks and two singles.  The first run came on a bases loaded wild pitch, while Ali Magiera had a two-run single.

Wayne State had consecutive singles with one out in the second by Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada) and Emily Guzzo (London, Ont.) but a ground out and a pop out ended the inning.

FSU tallied nine runs in the second on six hits, including a grand slam home run by Abby Mitchell, two walks, a hit by pitch, and a Warrior miscue.

WSU's Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) had a single in the fourth and Ruczynski reached on an error, but the next two batters were retired.

The Warriors had two hits in the fifth, plus a walk but could not score.

IN THE CIRCLE
Bonk (6-11) was tagged with the loss after surrendering five earned runs in one-plus inning.  She struck out one and walked three, while allowing three hits.  Emily Karas (Macomb Twp., Mich. / Utica Henry Ford II) pitched the final three innings allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

Aryn Gallacher (4-12) tossed the five inning shutout blanking WSU on six hits.  She struck out four and walked one.
