Softball Drops Two Games Against Northwood on Senior Day

The Warriors honored six seniors for their contributions to the Wayne State softball program.

DETROIT, Mich. -- The Wayne State University softball team (13-31 overall, 6-20 GLIAC) concluded its home schedule by dropping a pair of games to Northwood (29-14 overall, 15-10 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon.  The Warriors fell in the first game 4-2, before losing the finale 7-0.  Prior to the games, the Green and Gold honored departing seniors Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester), Kassidy Moonen (Clarkston, Mich.), Avieri Ludwig (Chesterfield, Mich. / Anchor Bay), Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.), Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont. / Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic) and Emily Karas (Macomb Twp, Mich. / Utica Henry Ford II).

GAME ONE RECAP
WSU started fast, as the Warriors were able to grab a 1-0 lead in the first inning.  Psenicka laced a single into left field and eventually ended up on third thanks to a pair of wild pitches.  Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) brought Psenicka home on a groundout to second base.

It didn't take long for Northwood to knot the game at 1-1 as Madison Jordan sent one over the right field wall.  Ameel, however, bounced back and closed the inning out with a strikeout.  The Timberwolves took a 2-1 advantage in the top of the third inning, as Delanie Grundman singled up the middle to bring home Haley Frank.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, WSU tied the game at 2-2, as Ludwig delivered a single, which scored Mady Ruczynski (Richmond, Mich. / Armada).  Ruczynski was hit by a pitch and worked her way to third base after a sacrifice bunt and wild pitch.

The game remained tied into the sixth inning, but Emily Mankel put the Timberwolves in front for good with a two-run homerun to left field.  Trailing 4-2, Wayne State threatened in the bottom half of the sixth inning, getting Ludwig and Ruczynski to second and third, but Favela popped out to the shortstop to end the threat.

In the seventh inning, the Warriors had one runner reach but couldn't muster up a rally, falling 4-2.

IN THE CIRCLE
Ameel went the distance for the Warriors, but she wound up with the loss.  She drops to 5-15 on the season.  Ameel allowed 11 hits and four runs, while striking out six Timberwolves.

For Northwood, Shayna Frank earned the win and pushed her record to 16-6.  She scattered five hits and allowed two runs.  She had seven strikeouts.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Ludwig collected a pair of hits and drove in a run.  Bonk drove in the other Wayne State run.  Psenicka, Leah Wrubel (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Mattawan) and Gabby Kaple (Galion, Ohio) each had a hit in the game.

LEADING THE TIMBERWOLVES
Alexis Koehler, Grundman and Mankel each had two hits in the contest.  Mankel and Grundman combined for three RBI's.

GAME TWO RECAP
Northwood jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, as Koehler walked and Mankel drove her home on a double to center field.  Mankel advanced to third on a wild pitch and was brought home on a sacrifice fly by Haley Frank.

The Timberwolves added a run in the third inning after a throwing error allowed Haley Frank to score.  Wayne State threatened in the bottom of the fourth inning, getting Myers and Bonk into scoring position.  But a strikeout closed the inning and kept the score at 3-0 in favor of the visitors.

Haley Frank led off the top of the fifth inning with a homerun to left field, and Brittany Steimel hit a solo shot over the left field fence moments later to push the Timberwolves' advantage to 5-0.  The Warriors, again, put two runners on in the fifth but were unable to score.

After a Koehler single, Mankel laced a ball over the center field wall to make the score 7-0.  Karas replaced Bonk and finished the game in the circle for WSU.  The Green and Gold had runners on base in each of the last two innings, but couldn't push a run across, eventually falling 7-0.

IN THE CIRCLE
Bonk dropped to 6-12 on the season after going five innings and allowing six earned runs.  She struck out three and walked five.  In relief, Karas was strong.  She didn't allow a hit and struck out two hitters in two innings of work.

For Northwood, Hailey Leister went seven innings and struck out three.  She didn't give up a run and allowed seven hits.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Myers, Bonk and Becky Hodder (Orangeville, Ont. / Orangeville District S.S.) each had two hits, while Wrubel had one.

LEADING THE TIMBERWOLVES
Jordan, Steimel, Mankel and Haley Frank tallied two hits apiece, and the quartet combined to score five runs and drive in six.

WSU will conclude regular season play with a pair of games at Purdue Northwest tomorrow afternoon.  The first game of the double header is set for 2 PM.
