Men's Tennis Defeats Davenport, Moves to GLIAC Tournament Championship

Daniel Grey, Ben Lakeman and Niklas Karcz each won their singles matches.

MIDLAND, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's tennis team (20-4 overall) moved one step closer to capturing the GLIAC Tournament Championship by defeating Davenport (18-7 overall) 4-1 on Saturday at the Midland Tennis Center.  The Warriors will play Grand Valley State in the championship match tomorrow morning.

SINGLES
After they won the doubles point, the Warriors only needed three singles wins to secure the victory.  Ben Lakeman (Penzance Cornwall England) provided WSU with one of those victories, defeating his opponent 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.

Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) also won his match, as he claimed a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles.

The other win came from Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany), who posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the No. 4 spot in the lineup.

Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) and Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) did not complete their matches, while Dom Spicer (London, England) fell at No. 1 singles, 1-6, 3-6.

DOUBLES
The Green and Gold took care of business in doubles, winning two matches to secure that point.  The No. 1 team of Grey and Drenth were able to take down their opponent 6-4.

At the No. 3 spot, Karcz and Lakeman were strong, earning a 6-2 victory.

Spicer and Laws did not get to finish their match.

FROM COACH MORROW
"Tough conditions and probably a little nerves on the first day of the tournament.  Got through it.  Proud of the guys, and we're playing Grand Valley tomorrow.  Looking forward to a good match with them," coach Bryan Morrow said.

UP NEXT
The Warriors will play GVSU in the GLIAC Tournament Championship, which is set for 9 AM on Sunday May 1st at Midland Tennis Center.  WSU defeated the Lakers 6-1 on April 15th.
