Men's Tennis Claims GLIAC Tournament Championship

The Warriors also won the regular-season title.

MIDLAND, Mich. -- After claiming the GLIAC regular-season championship, the Wayne State University men's tennis team (21-4 overall) took care of business in the GLIAC Tournament, defeating Grand Valley State (16-5 overall) 4-1 in Sunday afternoon's championship match at the Midland Tennis Center.

SINGLES
After collecting the doubles point, Wayne State was in need of just three singles wins to secure the match.  Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) kicked things off with a 7-5, 6-1 victory at the No. 6 spot.

Following him, the Warriors went up 3-0 in the match, as Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) was able to earn a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles.

The Lakers earned a point at the No. 4 spot of the lineup, with Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) falling 5-7, 4-6.

But just as he did in the victory over No. 1-Barry earlier this season, Ben Lakeman (Penzance Cornwall, England) was able to clinch the championship with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles.

Dom Spicer (London, England) and Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia) did not finish their matches due to the match being clinched.

DOUBLES
The Warriors quickly grabbed the doubles point, as they earned wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots of the lineup.  Lakeman and Karcz won at the bottom of the lineup, 6-2.

Spicer and Laws were also able to grab a 6-2 victory at No. 2 doubles.

UP NEXT
The Warriors await their seeding in the Midwest Regional Tournament.  The Green and Gold were ranked No. 2 in the latest poll.  Midwest Region play is set for May 9-10 at the campus sites of the top two seeds.
