Softball Concludes Regular-Season With Two Losses at PNW

The host Pride won 9-1 in both contests.

HAMMOND, Ind. -- The Wayne State University softball team (13-33 overall, 6-22 GLIAC) concluded its regular season with a pair of setbacks at Purdue University Northwest (26-16 overall, 15-11 GLIAC) on Sunday afternoon.  The host Pride won the opener 9-1 in five innings, then claimed the nightcap 9-1 in six innings.

GAME ONE RECAP
PNW scored twice in the bottom of the first on a one-out infield single by Ashley Bravo and a two-out, two-run home run to left by Selena Michko.

Purdue Northwest extended its lead to 4-0 with a pair of runs in the fourth.  Kara Alosio walked with two outs on a 3-2 pitch, then Aubrey Shroyer smacked a 2-1 offering over the fence in right center.

The Warriors scored once in the fifth as senior Avieri Ludwig (Chesterfield, Mich. / Anchor Bay) had a one-out single and went to third on a pinch-hit double by freshman Rylie Josephson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central).  Ludwig was able to scamper home on an RBI ground out by sophomore Abby Favela (Riverside, Ill. / Riverside-Brookfield).

The Pride scored five times in the bottom of the fifth to end the contest.  Jocey Gault and Michko hit back-to-back home runs to start the frame.  Three consecutive walks preceded a two-run single by Briana Poehler.  Shroyer's RBI double ended the game.

IN THE CIRCLE
Senior Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) allowed six earned runs on five hits and three walks in four-plus innings.  Ameel struck out four.  Sophomore Alexis Bonk (New Hudson, Mich. / South Lyon) recorded one out while allowing three earned runs on two hits and three walks.

Gabby Paliska (8-6) notched the win by limiting WSU to one earned run on three hits in five innings.  She struck out three and did not walk a batter.

GAME TWO RECAP
Purdue Northwest struck in the bottom of the second as Gault had a leadoff single and Madison Schultz's hit put runners on the corners.  Amanda Noblett and Allison Arnold followed with back-to-back RBI singles.  PNW added an unearned run on an RBI ground out.

WSU pulled within 3-1 in the top of third on a two-out solo home run by Josephson, her first collegiate round tripper.

The Pride answered back with four runs as Michko had an RBI single plating Shroyer, who had a leadoff single.  The next two PNW runs scored on wild pitches, with Arnold's infield single making it 7-1.

Purdue Northwest extended its lead in the fifth as Schultz walked, went to second on a ground out, moved to third on a fielder's choice and scored on a ground out.

A walk, a single and an RBI double by Michko ended the nightcap.

IN THE CIRCLE
Graduate student Emily Karas (Macomb Twp., Mich. / Utica Henry Ford II) allowed 10 hits and nine runs (eight earned) in five-plus innings.  She struck out four and walked three.

Emma Hill (4-2) held WSU to one run on three hits in six innings.  She struck out three and walked three.

Michko, Gault and Arnold each had two hits, with Michko, Arnold and Montana Martinez each recording two RBI.

UP NEXT
Wayne State's next games will be Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. in the GLIAC Tournament at Sports Force Park in Sandusky, Ohio.
