Men's Tennis Comes Back to Beat Embry-Riddle in NCAA Quarterfinals

The Warriors will play the top seed in Columbus State in the NCAA Semifinals.

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- The Wayne State University men's tennis team (25-4 overall) kept its season alive by coming back to defeat Embry-Riddle (19-6 overall) 4-3 Thursday afternoon at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.  The Warriors trailed 3-2 in the Division II NCAA Quarterfinal match, but Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) and Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) came through when it mattered most and closed out the match with victories at the No. 4 and No. 6 spots, respectively.

DOUBLES
The Warriors fell behind early in doubles as Dom Spicer (London, England) and Laws dropped their match at No. 2 doubles.

However, Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) and Grey collected a key win at the top spot of the lineup to draw even in doubles.

All eyes turned to the No. 3 court, where Ben Lakeman (Penzance Cornwall, England) and Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia) were able to secure the doubles point for Wayne State by upending their opponents, 7-5.

SINGLES
Already holding a 1-0 lead, Karcz extended the Green and Gold's advantage to 2-0 with an impressive 6-3, 6-3 victory at the No. 3 spot of the lineup.

Embry-Riddle brought the score to 2-1 in favor of the Warriors, as Drenth fell 4-6, 4-6 at No. 5 singles.

The Eagles knotted the score at 2-2, with Spicer falling, 6-0, 1-6, 1-6, at the No. 1 flight.

For the first time of the afternoon, the Warriors trailed, as Embry-Riddle took a 3-2 lead.  Lakeman dropped his match 3-6, 3-6, at No. 2 singles.

But the Warriors battled back, and closed out the match with a pair of victories.  The first came from Laws, who defeated his opponent, 0-6, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 6 singles.

Then, it was Grey who put the finishing touches on the victory for Wayne State, as he recorded a 6-2, 7-6 (6) win at the No. 4 spot of the lineup.

FROM COACH MORROW
"Last time we played them, the guys who won today, lost, and the guys who lost today, won, so it just shows the depth of this team and how they pick each other up.  I've never been around a team where on any given day somebody new can step up and pull out a win for us," coach Bryan Morrow said.  "Could not be prouder of these guys.  They're such an amazing group of young men.  It's a good day to be a Warrior."

UP NEXT
The Green and Gold will meet the top seed in Columbus State on Saturday, May 21st.  That match will begin at 8 AM, with the winner heading to the NCAA Championship match.  Flagler and Barry are playing in the other semifinal match.
