WSU Sprinter Sumrall Breaks School Record; Advances to Saturday's Final

Warrior junior ran an 11.61 to advance to the 100m dash finals.

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- Wayne State University junior sprinter Makayla Sumrall (Roseville, Mich.) finished fourth in her heat and ninth overall out of the three heats (23 competitors) to advance to Saturday's finals of the 100m dash at the 2022 NCAA Division 2 track and field national championships.

She eclipsed her own previous school record of 11.64 by running an 11.61 in the prelims on Thursday evening.

Sumrall, who won the GLIAC title in the 100m dash earlier this month, posted a season-best time of 11.64 at the Oakland University Elaine Leigh Invite on April 22nd to earn her qualifying time for the NCAA Championships.

She was voted GLIAC Female Track Athlete of the Meet after winning GLIAC titles in both the 100m dash (broke GLIAC Championship meet record by clocking in at 11.70 in the prelims) and the 200m dash (in an NCAA Provisional time of 24.34).  Sumrall earned All-GLIAC honors by running the second leg on the third place 4x100m relay at the GLIAC Championships, which posted the sixth-fastest time in school history (48.09).

Her selection marked the first time a Warrior had qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships since hurdler Karrington Seals competed three consecutive years in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

In 2018, Seals became the third First Team All-American in the six-year history of the outdoor track and field program at WSU joining Jen Rock (sixth in the 10k in 2014), and Chelsea Johnson (fifth in the steeplechase in 2015) with her sixth-place finish in the 100m hurdles event.
