Wayne State Finishes Third In GLIAC President's Trophy Standings

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University Department of Athletics finished third out of 11 schools in the 2021-22 GLIAC President's Trophy standings.as announced by the league office earlier this afternoon.

The third-place finish was the best for the Warriors since the 2013-14 academic year, when WSU finished third out of 16 schools.  Points are awarded based on the number of schools that sponsor that particular sport (i.e. eight schools sponsor men's tennis, first place team receives eight points, second place seven points, and so forth).

Grand Valley State, which sponsors all 21 GLIAC sports, earned 154.5 points to take first place.  Saginaw Valley State, with 19 sports, finished second with 108.5 points with WSU third with 102 points.  Trailing the Warriors were Davenport (95), Ferris State (91.5 points), Northwood (82), Michigan Tech (71), Northern Michigan (65.5), Parkside (55), Purdue Northwest (33), and Lake Superior (31).

When comparing the 14 sports both WSU and SVSU offer, the Warriors totaled 94 points compared to 86.5 for the Cardinals.

The Wayne State women's sports had a tremendous year finishing second with 64.5 points.  Both the volleyball squad and the women's cross country team placed third out of 11 teams to earn nine points in the fall.  Women's basketball tied-for-second earning 9.5 points, while women's swimming and diving finished second (four points) and women's indoor track and field placed third (seven points).

In the spring, women's tennis was co-champions (eight points) with women's outdoor track and field placing second (nine points).  Women's golf finished third (seven points), while softball was seventh (two points).

The men's sports teams placed sixth with 37.5 points.  Men's cross country garnered eight points in the fall with a third-place finish, with football totaling three points (tied-for-fifth).  In the winter sports season, men's swimming and diving earned five points (third-place finish), while men's basketball contributed 2.5 points (tied-for-ninth).  Men's tennis led the spring sports with a first-place finish (eight points), while baseball's runner-up finish garnered six points.  Men's golf contributed five points.

The fencing squads compete in the Central Collegiate Fencing Conference (CCFC) and do not earn GLIAC President's Trophy points.
