Sports Medicine Launches Warrior Strides

The used shoe and new sock drive will run through October.

The WSU Sports Medicine Department is sponsoring an old shoe and new sock collection campaign dubbed Warrior Strides, kicking off Oct. 1 and running the entire month.

Why October?
Warrior Strides is a campaign to support Alternatives for Girls, a Detroit-based organization whose mission is to help homeless and high-risk girls and young women avoid high risk activities, such as domestic violence.  Warrior Strides will collect new socks and old shoes throughout the entire month of October, which is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Why Socks and Shoes?
Socks are one of the most needed items in shelters, since people cannot donate used socks.  New socks (with tags still on) collected via Warrior Strides will be donated as-is to Alternatives for Girls, to go directly to the girls and young women who are using the services and resources provided by AFG.  Warrior Strides is also working with GotSneakers, a sneaker recycling organization that helps support fundraising programs throughout the country.  GotSneakers is supporting Warrior Strides for each pair of shoes collected, and all funds raised will be donated to AFG as well to help support their organization and overall community efforts.
Donation information:
If you are coming to an athletic event on Oct. 1 (WSU Homecoming), be sure to bring a pair of old shoes or a pair of new socks to donate.  Warrior Strides will be accepting donations at a tailgate table near the WSU Fieldhouse from 2:00 pm-6:00 pm.  The first 100 people to donate either a pair of old shoes or a pair of new socks will also receive a voucher for four (4) tickets to a Motor City Cruise game, as a thank you for their generosity!  Can't make it to Homecoming?  Collection bins will also be set up at the Mort Harris Recreation & Fitness Center for the entire month of October, as well as directly outside the Matthaei Athletic Training Room.  Warrior Strides will also have collection tables at several other home athletic events throughout the month; follow the Sports Medicine Department on Instagram (@wsusportsmed) to stay up to date on campaign details, including home game donation table locations.
Questions about the campaign can be directed to Head Athletic Trainer Lisa Erickson - lisa.erickson3@wayne.edu.
Warrior Strides would like to thank the many volunteers and community partners who are helping to make this campaign possible, including Divine Mathes, Zack Belsky, Torria Robinson, the Motor City Cruise, Dicks Sporting Goods, Printarun, Corrigan Moving, General Motors, and K.
