Women's Basketball Defeated 81-44 By #4-Grand Valley State

Moore and Fugate both finished in double figures in points.

ALLENDALE, MICH. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (9-5 overall, 1-5 GLIAC) trailed early and never had enough to keep up with #4-ranked Grand Valley State (15-1 overall, 6-0 GLIAC), dropping an 81-44 decision on Thursday night at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The Warriors scored the first bucket of the contest on a lay-up by senior forward Maxine Moore (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Country Day).  The Lakers then proceeded to score 16 of the game's next 20 points to take a commanding 16-6 advantage.  WSU and GVSU would combine to tally 20 points over the final 5:12 (11-9 Grand Valley).  Senior guard Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) and sophomore forward Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) combined for 10 of the Warriors' 15 points in the stanza.
 
Second Quarter
Grand Valley and Wayne State exchanged made baskets to start the quarter, as Lexi Plitzuweit, Fugate, and Hannah Kulas all notched lay-ups in the paint.  Both teams played through a scoring drought of nearly three minutes before Plitzuweit connected on a three-pointer to put GVSU ahead 34-17.  The Lakers saw their lead rise to as much as 26 when Emily Spitzley hit a three-pointer near the end of the frame.  Graduate student Sophia Karasinski (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central) shot a three-pointer with 86 seconds remaining, cutting the deficit to 23 where the score would be going into the break.  Grand Valley shot 19-of-37 (51 percent) from the field, while going 9-of-16 (56 percent) from three-point range in the first half, compared to Wayne State's 11-of-30 (37 percent) from the floor and 1-of-10 (10 percent) from beyond the arc.

Third Quarter
The Lakers out-scored the visiting Warriors 16-10 in the stanza, the closest quarter of the game.  GVSU grabbed the first four points of the period, before a jumper by Moore gave WSU its first points of the half. Grand Valley kept working and their lead ballooned to 31 when Kulas made from three with just over two minutes left. Four Warriors contrubuted towards the 10 points, with Moore scoring four and Fugate tallying three on a made three-pointer. 
 
Fourth Quarter
16 of the 24 points scored in the final quarter came between the 8:30 and 5:33 mark. GVSU out-scored WSU 10-6 in this span. The clubs totaled just eight points in the final 5:30. Moore made a jumper with 4:22 to play in the game, and the Warriors did not score again after that. The deficit at the final horn ended up being Grand Valley's largest lead of the contest. 
 
TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 34 percent (18-of-53) from the floor, while Grand Valley State was 46 percent (32-of-69). The Lakers were 12-of-29 (41 percent) from beyond the arc for the contest, compared to just 11 percent for the Warriors (2-of-19). At the foul line, Grand Valley went 5-of-9 (56 percent) and Wayne State made six of their 12 attempts at the charity stripe. The Warriors lost the rebounding battle 48-29. GVSU forced 25 WSU turnovers as opposed to the 22 turnovers Wayne State forced, and turned those into a 36-13 advantage in points off turnovers. Grand Valley also had a 39-8 edge in bench points. 
 
LEADING THE WARRIORS
Moore led the way with 12 points, just edging Fugate's 11. Moore, Tripp, and Karasinski all tied for the team-lead in rebounds with four each. Senior guard Kate McArthur (Warren, Mich. / Cousino) led all players for either side with a career-high five steals. 
 
LEADING THE LAKERS
Nicole Kamin led all scorers with 15 points. She was also a perfect 3-of-3 (100 percent) from three to lead the team in three-point percentage. Spitzley made a game-high four threes on five attempts and contributed three steals and two blocks. Plitzuweit and Rylie Bisballe also reached double-figures.
