Women's Basketball Overcomes Late Ferris State Rally, Wins 58-55

Warriors scored the final six points of the contest.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (10-7 overall, 3-6 GLIAC) needed some heroics but held off a late charge from visiting Ferris State University (11-7 overall, 4-5 GLIAC) to win 58-55 at the Wayne State Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors scored the final six points to recover from a lost lead in the late stages of the fourth quarter.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
WSU held FSU to just four points over the first 10 minutes of action. Ferris State shot 1-of-15 (7 percent) over the span while going 0-of-7 from three-point range. Wayne State had a 13-4 advantage after the first stanza, with scoring spread out between six different Warriors and none tallying over three points. No basket was made in the final 2:26 of the frame.

Second Quarter
Over the first three minutes of the new quarter, the Bulldogs already more than doubled their output from the first quarter, scoring nine points. WSU was able to keep its lead, however, with a triple from graduate student Sophia Karasinski (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central) and a made shot from senior Kate McArthur (Warren, Mich. / Cousino). Wayne State's lead increased to as many as nine until Ferris State drilled three triples to go on a 9-0 run in the final two minutes of the half, with Elle Irwin hitting two and Mia Riley one. FSU rebounded from the slow start from beyond the arc by making 4-of-8 triple tries in the second stanza.

The Warriors led for the entire half once grabbing a lead at the 8:39 mark of the first quarter.

Third Quarter
FSU nabbed its first lead of the contest early in the frame, with Irwin hitting another triple. WSU was able to tie the game at 29-29 with an old-fashioned three-point play by sophomore Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center). At the media timeout, the Warriors successfully grew their edge to nine points after a three-pointer from senior Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.). Wayne State led by eight (44-36) after 30 minutes of action.

Fourth Quarter
Although the Warriors' advantage on the scoreboard reached double-digits early in the final quarter, the Bulldogs mounted a serious comeback effort, going on a 10-0 run between the 6:25 and 3:22 mark of the stanza to knot the score at 50-50. Ferris State later stole the lead back on made baskets from Irwin and Kenzie Bowers. In the final minute of play, FSU held a three-point edge but would not score again in the contest.

The Warrior heroics began with Tripp scoring on a lay-up to cut the deficit to one with 58 seconds left. Later, she hit a pair of free throws to grab a 56-55 advantage. Moore drilled a pair of three throws of her own, and the Warriors survived a last second three-point try from Mallory McCartney to walk away with the win.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 17-of-46 (37 percent) from the floor in the contest, with Ferris State shooting 31 percent (18-of-59). The Warriors were more successful from beyond the arc, hitting 5-of-13 triples (39 percent) compared to the Bulldogs' 26 percent (7-of-27).
