Women's Basketball Drops Home Game To Michigan Tech, 86-71

Fugate and Tripp combine for 43 points and 16 rebounds.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (8-5 overall, 1-4 GLIAC) fell behind early and could never catch up in falling 86-71 to visiting Michigan Tech (13-3 overall, 5-1 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon at the Wayne State Fieldhouse.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The Warriors started slowly only scoring 10 points in the opening period on 4-of-15 shooting (27 percent), while the visiting Huskies shot 47 percent from the floor on their way to a 20-point quarter.  WSU led 3-2 after a triple by senior Kate McArthur (Warren, Mich. / Cousino) then had a 6-5 advantage following a conventional three-point play by sophomore Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center).  MTU out-scored Wayne State 15-4 over the final six minutes of the period.

Second Quarter
WSU's deficit remained between 10 and 14 points for the first two minutes of the second period until a driving lay-up by senior guard Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) trimmed the margin to nine (26-17).  The Warriors trailed by double digits until graduate student Sophia Karasinski (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central) connected from beyond the arc to make it an eight-point contest (33-25) with just under 3:30 left until halftime.  The Huskies ended the half on an 11-2 run to lead 44-27 at intermission.  Isabella Lenz had 12 of MTU's 24 points in the quarter.

Third Quarter
Despite the teams combining for 52 (29 by MTU, and 23 by WSU) in the third period, Wayne State's deficit was never fewer than 19 points.  Fugate totaled 14 points in the stanza on 5-of-7 shooting (2-of-4 3-PT), while also making both foul shots.

Fourth Quarter
The Warriors out-scored the visitors 21-13 over the final 10 minutes.  The margin was at least 20 points until WSU concluded the game on a 10-2 run over the final three minutes.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 37 percent (22-of-60) from the floor, compared to MTU's 46 percent (30-of-65).  WSU was 6-of-18 (33 percent) from beyond the arc, with the Huskies connecting on 8-of-20 (40 percent) triple tries.  The Warriors were 21-of-27 (78 percent) from the foul line, with Michigan Tech making 18-of-23 (78 percent) from the charity stripe.  MTU had a 41-40 edge in rebounding, while the Huskies had just seven turnovers to WSU's 13 miscues which led to a 24-3 advantage in points off turnovers for Michigan Tech.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Fugate scored a game-high 24 points, including 22 in the second half, while earning a double-double with 11 rebounds.  Tripp was 9-of-9 from the foul line in scoring 19 points.

LEADING THE HUSKIES
